Europe Carbon Black Market experienced
significant growth as its demand reached 2.05
million tonnes in 2021 and it is anticipated to
grow at a healthy CAGR of 5.81 during the
forecast period (2023-35).   Carbon black is
nearly pure elemental carbon, usually found as a
fine powder or in pellet form. Various functional
groups are combined on the surface of carbon
black. By modifying its surface properties, we
can change the compounds characteristics. The
properties of carbon black also depend on the
ratio of primary and secondary feedstock and air,
which should be carefully monitored to get the
desired properties.    Carbon black is produced
industrially using a mixture of gaseous or liquid
hydrocarbons which are easily vaporized. Raw
materials which can be used for carbon black
manufacturing include certain fractions of coal
tar oils and petrochemical oils from petroleum
refining or the production of Ethylene from
Naphtha. The primary feedstock, called carbon
black feedstock (CBFS) or carbon black oil (CBO),
comprises heavy hydrocarbons (C12 and higher
compounds) and other higher compounds. Carbon
black is manufactured by the incomplete
decomposition of heavy hydrocarbons under
controlled conditions. The various manufacturing
processes differ from each other depending on the
arrangement of heat and decomposition stages.
More than 90 of carbon black produced worldwide
is manufactured through the furnace black
process.   Depending on the function and purpose
of carbon black, it can be categorized as carbon
black for rubber, carbon black pigment, and
conductive carbon black. Speciality carbon black
has a wide variety of end-uses and demand is
largely driven by the development of the
coatings, polymers, and printing industries.
Demand for speciality carbon black in the
coatings and polymers industries is mainly
influenced by the levels of industrialization,
infrastructure, construction, and car ownership.
The major factor affecting the demand for rubber
carbon black for the Tires industry is the number
of replacement original equipment tires
produced. Revival of the global automotive
industry coupled with expanding non-rubber
applications including application in paints,
inks, coatings, masterbatches and conductive
polymers created an increased demand for carbon
black during 2015-21. Establishing a carbon black
production facility requires a lot of capital
input which restricts the entry of small players
in the business. The majority of the European
carbon black market is dominated by companies
with sizeable cash flows. Global companies in
Europe have production facilities spread across
various countries, which allows the establishment
of strong control in the European market. These
companies are Birla Carbon, Orion Engineered
Carbons S.A, Omsk Carbon Group and Cabot
Corporation. These companies employ different
strategies for different regions to increase
market penetration.

  • The increasing demand for Carbon Black in a wide
range of the End-user industries such as Tyres,
    Mechanical Rubber Goods, Plastics Polymers,
Printing Inks others (Paints, etc), is largely
driven by the development of the tire and
mechanical rubber goods industries. Demand for
rubber carbon black in mechanical rubber goods is
mainly influenced by vehicle trends, construction
    activity and general industrial production.
Carbon black is used in the tyre industry to
enhance the mechanical properties of tyres by
reinforcing natural rubber and increasing the
strength and resistance to abrasion. With the
growth of the automobile industry globally, tyre
production output is expected to increase as a
result of which the tyre industry is estimated to
account for about 70 of the carbon black market
by 2035. The primary application for speciality
grade of Carbon Black is Coatings in the large
number of industrial sectors such as Automotive
    Transportation, Architectural Transportation.
In Polymer segments it is used in making Wires
    Cables, Pipes, Adhesives Sealants, Engineering
    Plastics, Synthetic Fibres, Film Thermal
    Insulation. Other applications are Printing
Packaging for inks, toner, inkjet and Building
    Construction materials and Special applications
    in Batteries, Refractory Materials Non-woven
Textiles. Another segment that utilizes MRG is in
the manufacturing of Belts, Hoses, Precision
Sealing Systems, Solid Bicycle Tires Rollers,
    Rubber Cables, Rubber Food Pharmaceuticals.
  •
  • Among different countries, Germany is anticipated
to be the most lucrative market for Carbon Black
suppliers with a share of around 35, and the
country will maintain its dominance over the
others in the forecast period as well. The
regional dominance was mainly due to the presence
    of dominating emerging automotive industries
which are among the major consumers of carbon
Black. Leading general rubber goods companies
Continental AG and Freudenberg Group are
headquartered in Germany, owing to which a large
amount of carbon black is consumed by Germany.
Europe markets are expected to grow rapidly over
the coming years owing to rising demand from
end-use industries such as Tires, Mechanical
Rubber Goods, Plastics Polymers, Printing Inks,
Others (Paints, etc). Europe, Russia, Germany
France, being the leading Carbon Black producers
are observing the highest consumption of carbon
black in the Europe market share and are expected
to continue their dominance. France was the
second-largest regional market in 2021 followed
by Russia, Italy, UK, Spain Poland.
