  • Book Trailer

15
LS BOOK TRAILER
I. Overview Teams will make their literature
text come alive through a dramatization of a
scene or scenes from the text. II. The mission
Since most of the audience members may not have
read the Lit text, the team's mission is to
create a persuasive presentation of the book.
They must present the text in such a way that
people who watch it will want to go out, buy the
book and read it. In other words, the
presentation is like a movie trailer which is
meant to encourage reading. Suggestions Teams
could think about what the most significant,
exciting and interesting section of the book is
and then present this to the viewer. Elements of
suspense could also be included to whet their
appetite.
16
LS BOOK TRAILER
III. Style Teams are encouraged to make their
presentation as creative as possible. They can
use narration, they can sing, they can include an
advertising jingle eg. a commercial break, they
can speak in poetry, they can use multimedia -
basically they should do whatever they think is
best to persuade the audience to read the
book. IV. Costume / props As mentioned above,
teams should focus on the creativity of their
delivery and presentation. Teams should minimize
use of props. Costumes may be used to complement
the delivery but should not be the focus of the
presentation. V. Team size Six to ten members
17

VI. Reporting time Teams to report to
facilitator 15mins OUTSIDE venue area. They will
only enter the venue when it is their turn. Right
after their presentation, they may stay in the
venue area or leave the room quietly. VII. Time
limit Set-up time 1 min (teams to signal to
facilitator when they are ready) Total
Presentation time 15mins max. VII. The
competitive element The trailer will be judged by
a panel of teacher-judges

VIII. Judging rubricsTeams will be judged on the
following 1.Delivery and Presentation factor
(10 points) - the focus is clear, the message is
persuasive. The audience is engaged and attentive
throughout the performance. The presentation has
managed to convince most people to want to read
the book to find out more. The skit should be
presented in a creative and interesting way. 2.
Clarity of Expression (10 points) - performers
have clear articulation and good pronunciation
performers is audible to everyone in the
audience. Note the facilitator has the right to
deduct points from teams if the story presented
is grossly inaccurate.
19

IX. Things to remember while presenting Teams can
prepare small take-aways/tokens for the audience
(about 80-100) eg. Bookmarks etc. These tokens
should be related to the literary text and should
not be too costly (suggestion - not more than
0.50 per person) Connect with the audience -
make eye contact with them. Do not face the wall
when talking No script is allowed during the
presentation. Points will be deducted if students
read from a script. Be loud and clear - speak
into the microphone X. Equipment
Provided Projector/laptop, CD player, 2mics
20
LS BOOK TRAILER
  • IMPORTANT POINTS TO NOTE
  • Points will deducted for every minute a team goes
    over-time
  • The drama will be performed on stage. Teachers
should ensure that students do meet basic
standards of acting e.g. non-reliance on script,
projection of voice and acting to audience. Teams
should have at least 2 full-dress rehearsals on
their own before the actual day.

21
  • LITERATURE
  • PARADE

22
LITERATURE BOOK PARADE
I. Objective This is an opportunity for schools
to showcase their literature projects. Teachers
can use this as a platform to initiate projects
in their classes. II. Task Each school will be
provided with 2 tables (schools may request for
more if they need) to display their projects.
III. Venue The Lit parade will be placed on the
parade square near the canteen. Visitors may tour
the exhibits during the tea break as well as
in-between the different events IV. Types of
projects Book covers, visual storyboard, photo
displays, models, visual writeups etc
23
LITERATURE BOOK PARADE
VI. Suggestions Projects should be visual and
attractive. The aim is to introduce other
students to the lit text and entice them to read
it. Each school should have at least 2 students
to be at the booth at all times to talk to the
guests or introduce them to their projects. VII.
Set-up Schools may set up their displays from 8am
onwards. The display must be ready by 9.30am on
Sat. Students involved in setting up may have to
miss the first part of the Lit Fest
programme.

LITERARY TRIVIA QUIZ
I. Objective The purpose of this activity is to
introduce students to literary history in a fun,
light-hearted fashion. II. Task Each student
will be provided with a quiz sheet in their
goodie bags. They will have until the first half
of the festival to complete the quiz and submit
it. III. Venue Students may fill up the quiz
sheet at any location. Instructions about where
to submit the quiz will be printed on the quiz
sheet itself. IV. Prizes Student entries will

prizes.
27
  • SET TEXT
  • DEBATE

28
SET TEXT DEBATE
I. Overview The objective of this event is for
students to work in a team to craft an argument
through a debate format. Through this fun event,
students will learn to articulate their thoughts
and organize their answers in a persuasive
manner. II. Task Each team will be given an
argumentative question based on their Literature
text. For example, one of the topics given based
on Shakespeare's Twelfth Night during the Lit
Fest in 2005 was "This house believes that
Twelfth Night is a Feminist Play". The team will
have to take the side of either the proposition
or the opposition and argue their case before a
panel of judges. The school with the most
convincing and organized response will win.
29
SET TEXT DEBATE
III. Team Team size 3 members IV. Structure
and flow Structure of the debates There will
be two teams - opposition versus the proposition.
The topic as well as which side each school will
take will be decided randomly and fairly by the
organizing committee. Each team should consist
of three speakers (schools may also have one
reserve). Each speaker (including the last
speaker) is given 4 minutes to present their
case. Reply speeches must be within 2 minutes.
30
SET TEXT DEBATE
The structure is as follows Proposition
speaker 1 Opposition speaker 1 Proposition
speaker 2 Opposition 2 Proposition 3
Opposition 3 Reply Opposition speaker Reply
Proposition speaker There will be no breaks
between each speaker there will be no free-fire
round from the audience. Speakers are not allowed
to converse with anyone other than their own team
members. Opposing speakers are not allowed to
rebut or question another speaker while he/she is
speaking.
31
SET TEXT DEBATE
  • V. Suggested preparation structure
  • Propo argue for the topic given.
  • Oppo rebut the arguments of the proposition
team as well as to provide an alternative view to
    the topic given.
  • In both teams, there should be strong focus on
the issues inherent in the topic as well as an
ability to convince through logic and rebuttal.
  • 1st speaker Define, state stand and introduce
    key reasons
  • 2nd speaker sound arguments with evidence,
    rebuts opposition
  • 3rd speaker reiterates teams position and
    provides strong rebuttal

32
SET TEXT DEBATE
  • IMPORTANT POINTS TO NOTE
  • Points will deducted for every second a speaker
    goes over-time
  • The Set text topic will be emailed to the teacher
I/C of each school on the 27th of June. Teachers
can also check the lit fest website on this date.
Schools can start preparations from this date
    onwards
  • Students must prepare the debate on their own.
They are not allowed to seek help from other
friends, parents or teachers. Teams will be
    disqualified if they do so.

33
