Article MAKHACHKALA, Russia   A fire in a
boarding school for the deaf in southern Russia
killed 28 children and seriously injured 17
others Thursday, as rescuers raced from bed to
bed to awaken students who could not hear alarms.

    blaze spread quickly.
  • The blaze engulfed the wing where the schools
    youngest children were sleeping.
  • It is said to have been caused by a short circuit
    that occured when electricity was restored to the
    building after a blackout.
