  • Learning Objectives
  • L3 Identify that air has weight and is all
    around us.
  • L4 Describe and define the properties of a gas.
  • L4 (Re-cap) Describe the properties of liquids
    and solids.

Starter Review childrens understanding of
liquids by asking them to draw a concept map
using the terms liquid, freeze, water, ice,
change, warm, flow, shape, volume, evaporate,
dissolve and state of matter. Development Ask
children to suggest when they have seen water
freezing, and what conditions are necessary for
this to happen. Ask them to suggest how to make
it melt. Give each pupil an ice cube in the palm
of their hand (do they remember this from Y2..but
now they have to say if it is a solid, liquid or
gas?) Observe and describe the melting what do
we have now? Solid, liquid or gas? Ask the
children to predict how they would convert liquid
to a gas and get it back again. Make a record of
this, so that children can see how their learning
has moved forward at a later date. Introduce and
explain the diagram.

seedlings are growing near a fully grown oak
tree. Give TWO reasons why seedling A in the
picture may not grow well. _______________________

help them grow. How do trees use light to help
them grow 1 mark Name TWO other things that
trees need to take in to help them grow 2

sunflower Stephen plants a sunflower seed in the
school garden He measures the height of the plant
at the end of each week. Use the graph to
answer these questions. How tall was the
sunflower at 2 weeks? 1 mark ____________________

graph. They have some ideas about the sunflowers
growth Only ONE idea is correct. Y5 PLANTS
