2Laparoscopic Surgery Description
Laparoscopic or minimally invasive surgery is a
specialized technique for performing surgery. In
the past, this technique was commonly used for
gynecologic surgery and for gall bladder surgery.
Over the last 10 years the use of this technique
has expanded into intestinal surgery. In
traditional open surgery the surgeon uses a
single incision to enter into the abdomen.
Laparoscopic surgery uses several 0.5-1cm
incisions. Each incision is called a port. At
each port a tubular instrument known as a troche
is inserted. Specialized instruments and a
special camera known as a laparoscope are passed
through the troches during the procedure.

4Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS)
- Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is a
minimally invasive procedure used to visualize,
diagnose and treat sinus problems. An ENT (ears,
nose and throat) specialist will gently insert a
small instrument, called an endoscope, into your
nostril to examine the area to be operated on,
then use specialized tools to restore drainage
and ventilation between your nose and your
sinuses.

5Robotic thyroid surgery
- Robotic thyroid surgery, also known as robotic
thyroidectomy, is a minimally invasive procedure
that involves removing a part or the entire
thyroid gland with the assistance of the da Vinci
Surgical System. Unlike conventional open surgery
which needs a larger cut in the neck to reach the
thyroid gland, this robotic procedure only
involves making a small cut in the armpit instead.

6Lung cancer
- Lung cancer is an abnormal growth in the tissues
of the lung. When you breathe in, air goes down
your trachea (windpipe), and into the lungs,
where it spreads through tubes called bronchi
(air passages). Most lung cancer begins in the
cells that line these tubes.

7Breast surgery
A breast-conserving surgery (BCS) such as
lumpectomy removes the cancer and tissue
surrounding the tumor, but not the entire breast.
With data showing equivalent survival results
between BCS and mastectomy, more women with early
stage breast cancers are choosing this option in
order to preserve their breasts. Achieving
complete cancer removal with clear margins is key
to this surgery.

8Ovarian cancer
Ovarian cancer is an abnormal growth of tissue in
the ovary. The ovaries are part of the female
reproductive system where the eggs are produced.
Most ovarian cancers develop on the surface of
the ovary. There are 3 main types of ovarian
cancer Epithelial tumors develop on the surface
(epithelium) of the ovary and are the most common
type Germ cell tumors occur in the cells that
produce the eggs and can develop in younger
women Stromlo tumors develop in the estrogen and
progesterone-producing tissues of the ovary
estrogen and progesterone are the hormones that
regulate the menstrual cycle.

9Laparoscopic nephrectomy
Laparoscopic nephrectomy is a safe and effective
procedure that allows a diseased or cancerous
kidney to be removed without having to have open
surgery. In this operation, the surgeon will make
3 small cuts (each being 1 1.5cm in diameter)
in the abdomen while you are under general
anesthesia. The surgery is carried out with high
accuracy instruments inserted into the abdomen
through these cuts. Guided by images on the video
screen, the surgeon will remove the affected
kidney from the body.
