6
Technical terms
  • Dimension of your screen (pixels)
  • ____ x ____
  • File size
  • bit, byte, kilobyte (KB), megabyte (MB), gigabyte
    (GB)

7
Image Processing
8
Procedures for image processing
  • 1. Import image (from scanner, digital camera)
  • 2. Edit (w/ Photoshop) for two purposes
  • -better quality
  • -appropriate size (max. 35K)
  • 3. Save in GIF or JPG or PNP formats
  • 4. Upload
  • 5. Place on Web page.

9
Guidelines for image processing
  • File formats
  • Color
  • Resolution
  • Typography

10
Color depth
  • 1-bit color (21 2 colors) often black and white
  • 2-bit color (22 4 colors)
  • 4-bit color (24 16 colors)
  • 8-bit color (28 256 colors) GIF
  • 24-bit (224 millions of colors) True colors
    JPG

11
GIF format
  • Compression No more than 256 colors
  • Transparent GIF But may produce disappointing
results when the image contains antialiasing.
  • Animated GIF But GIF animations are rarely
    meaningful!

12
JPG format
  • True colors (24 bit)
  • Best at compressing smooth tonal transitions
  • Cannot properly reproduce the hard-edged graphics
    or bright color boundaries.

Summary
  • Advantages of GIF
  • GIFs of diagrammatic images look better than
    JPEGs
  • GIF supports transparency and animation
  • Advantages of JPEG
  • JPEG produces excellent results for most
    photographs
  • JPEG supports full-color images

16
PNG format
  • Default of Fireworks
  • Alternative to GIF
  • PNG gives a much wider range of colors than GIF
(truecolor up to 48-bit compared to 8-bit
    256-color for GIF)
  • But PNG doesnt support animation
  • (Previously) not as widely supported as GIF or
    JPEG

17
PNG vs. JPG
  • PNG is a better choice than JPEG for storing
images that contain text, line art, or other
    images with sharp transitions.
  • What if an image contains both sharp transitions
    and photographic parts?
  • A choice must be made between the large but sharp
PNG and a small JPEG with artifacts around sharp
    transitions.

18
Imaging strategies
  • Photographs as JPEGs
  • Line arts and hard-edged graphics as GIFs
  • Dont enlarge any graphics
  • Always save your original uncompressed images.

19
Color management
  • RGB (Red, Green, Blue)
  • Decimal (base-10)
  • _ _ _ (0-255) _ _ _ (0-255) _ _ _ (0-255)
  • Hexidecimal (base-16)
  • _ _(0-F) _ _ (0-F) _ _ (0-F)
  • http//www.webmonkey.com/reference/color_codes/
  • SHB (hue, saturation, brightness)

21
Screen vs. printed color artwork
  • Low vs. high resolution
  • Insufficient for displaying diagrams that
    incorporate many curves or angles

22
Screen resolution
  • The number of pixels a screen can display with a
given area. Usually 72 pixels per inch (ppi).
  • So a 72x72 square graphic is one inch on a 72 ppi
    monitor.
  • Scanning guidelines http//www.chicagomediaworks.c

23
Typography
  • Typography plays a double role as both verbal and
    visual communication.
  • Use typeface to create a personality for work
    Its the voice.
  • Each typeface speaks in a different tone of
    voice.
  • Typefaces Two font families
  • Serif
  • Sans serif

Typography
  • Dont use more than 2 typefaces on one page
    without a good reason
  • Sans serif fonts usually work better on screen
  • But serifs work well for headlines
  • Dont use all capital letters
