1
CaRMS and Residency Programs...the Basics
  • Residents Night
  • April 27, 2006

2
CaRMS
  • CaRMS The Canadian Resident Matching Service
  • How it works
  • Students are interviewed for residency programs
  • The students create a ranked list of their
    preferred residency programs

3
CaRMS
  • The residency programs also create a ranked list
of the students they have interviewed
  • The information is entered into a computer and
residents are matched to the residency programs

4
CaRMS
  • There are two goals
  • to get as many students as possible into their
    highest ranked residency program
  • AND
  • to have as many programs as possible get the
students they ranked the highest after the
    interviews

5
The Algorithm
  • ALWAYS in favor of the student
  • Choose your rank list in order of
  • YOUR PREFERENCE!

6
CaRMS
  • There are two iterations of the match
  • (NOTE in most provinces you must be a Canadian
citizen or landed immigrant to obtain
    postgraduate medical training)
  • First iteration Available to students graduating
    from Canadian medical schools
  • (also students graduating from U.S. medical
schools will be considered in the first iteration
    in some provinces)

7
CaRMS
  • Second iteration Available to former graduates
of Canadian medical schools, U.S. students and
graduates of medical schools in other countries
(these are International Medical Graduates or
    IMGs)
  • In addition, students who remain unmatched after
the first iteration can apply to the second
    iteration

8
CaRMS
  • In 2005/2006, CaRMS is providing matching
services to residency programs at 13 of the 16
    Canadian medical schools
  • The three medical schools not participating are
Université Laval, Université de Sherbrooke and
    Université de Montréal

9
CaRMS
  • The CaRMS website has a list of residency
programs by specialty and what schools offer them
  • Or you can look up a university and find out what
    residency programs are offered there
  • Check out both of these under the Program
Directory link on the CaRMS webpage
    (www.carms.ca)

10
CaRMS
  • Each residency program that uses the CaRMS
matching service has individual requirements for
    selecting residents
  • Details of what each program looks for when
choosing its residents are in the individual
program descriptions for each institution on the
    CaRMS website
