Univac's Fastrand II drum used with the Univac
1108 in the last 1960s. This drum held 22M 36 bit
words. The drum stood in a frame about 1.8M high
and weighing about 2 tons. It had a window on the
front to allow operators (or the public if the
drum was placed appropriately) to watch the drum
in operation.
17
In operation, it emitted a deep rumble
accompanied by a whoosh of air much like the
engine room in Star Trek.

  • The year 1953 saw the development of IBM's 701
EDPM, which, according to IBM, was the first
    commercially successful general-purpose computer.
  • The 701's invention was part of the Korean War
effort. Thomas Johnson Watson, Jr. wanted to
contribute a "defense calculator" to aid in the
    United Nations' policing of Korea.
