The Road Map-Proposed Elements
  • Advocacy and Engagement introducing the concept
    to the stakeholders. The Media Launch on 15 May
    2003 was an initial step followed by a
    Pre-launching Workshop on Global Compact held on
    27 September 2003 and hosted by EFP.
  • National Policy dialogue and partnerships fora
    setting of an advisory board the Global Compact
    Steering Board.
  • The Global Compact launch in Pakistan planned for
    end October/November.
  • Concrete initiatives identify specific national
    development challenges/priorities where the
    business sector can contribute. UN can serve as a
    facilitator.

Partnerships
  • Citizens Police Liaison Committee has become an
    important component of policing in Karachi.
    Rooted in the business community, and dependent
    largely on private donations and on the volunteer
    labour of business people.
  • Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan
    introduce good corporate governance practices and
    establish a sound, transparent and accountable
    regulatory framework for the corporate sector in
    Pakistan.
  • Corporate Social Responsibility survey.

Poverty Alleviation Examples of Concrete
Partnerships
  • The Program for Improving Livelihoods in Urban
    Settlements (PLUS) is aimed at introducing and
    experimenting an alternative, integrated,
    effective, affordable and community-based
    approaches for improving the conditions of the
    predominantly low income communities in selected
    urban areas.
  • National Commission on Human Development channel
    resources from the Government of Pakistan, the
    private sector and the international donor
    community.
  • Industrial Information Network - INN, to promote
    SMEs in Pakistan and oversees, and facilitate
    entrepreneurs in e-commerce trade established by
    UNIDO in 2001 with technical assistance of
    COMSATS, MOST and SMEDA worth Rs. 40 million

Partnerships
  • Partnership with Premier and Shell to conserve
    the Junipers Forest in Balochistan.
  • Fuel Efficiency in Road Transport Sector
    Partnership with Pakistan State Oil, Shell and
    Caltex.
  • Recycling and Solid Waste Management The Kasur
    Tannery Pollution Control Project is example of
    mutual cooperation between the Government of
    Pakistan, the Government of Punjab, the Export
    Promotion Bureau, the tanner industry of Kasur,
    UNDP and UNIDO.
  • UNIDO is working in collaboration with Ozone Cell
    and the Ministry of Environment, through a
    multilateral fund, to the phasing out of Ozone
    Depletion Substances (ODS) of various production
    units in Pakistan. Partner firms include Riaz
    Electric, Pakistan Elektron, Treet Corporation,
    Hirra Farooq, Ideal Appliances and Himont
    Chemical.

Partnerships
  • UNIDO, in collaboration with the Ministry of
    Environment, Green Earth, and with the financial
    commitment of Tetrapak, is planning to launch a
    joint campaign for promoting awareness on
    recycling issues and investment potential of this
    sector.
  • UNIDO also conducted since January 2002, a joint
    campaign for promoting awareness on solid waste
    management, in collaboration with Toxicol.

Labour Standards
  • ILO working with the Employers Federation of
    Pakistan, Trade Union Federations, the Export
    Promotion Bureau, the Sialkot Chamber of Commerce
    and Industry, the Surgical Instruments
    Manufacturers Association, the Pakistan Carpet
    Manufacturers and Exporters Association, which
    have, over the last three years, contributed 2.5
    million to support the implementation of the
    Global Compact principles on labour standards.
  • ILO implemented a major project on the
    elimination of child labour in the football
    industry in Sialkot, in partnership with the
    Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry, All
    Pakistan Federation of Trade Unions, ILO and
    UNICEF, and with the cooperation of national and
    international NGOs.

    committed to implement the UN Global Compact
    Principles based on strong commitment of BMW to
    sustainability and environmental leadership.
  • BASF Worlds leading chemical company- is
    partnering with UNEP and UNIDO in a project to
    disseminate the eco-efficiency analysis via
    National Cleaner Production Centres.
  • The Salvamar Project case study in Brazil has
    been involved in development of environmental and
    social awareness amongst communities.
