RAGS Report (2007)
  • Findings Having reviewed trends in the United
States and abroad, the committee is deeply
concerned that the scientific and technological
building blocks critical to our economic
leadership are eroding at a time when many other
    nations are gathering strength.

5
RAGS Report
  • RECOMMENDATION A Increase Americas talent pool
by vastly improving K12 science and mathematics
    education.
  • RECOMMENDATION C Make the United States the most
attractive setting in which to study and perform
research so that we can develop, recruit, and
retain the best and brightest students,
scientists, and engineers from within the United
    States and throughout the world.

6
Composing a Computing Response
  • Spring 2008 meeting of representatives of
    professional societies.
  • What are we doing now?
  • What should we be doing?
  • Can we come up with a consensus view?
  • Can we come up with a consensus strategy?
  • Organized by ACM Education BoardPlanning
Committee Joe Urban, Jane Prey, Heikki Topi,
Mark Guzdial.Funded (and instigated) by Harriet
    Taylor.

Example Organizations
  • ACM Education Board
  • IEEE Computer Society
  • AIS Association for Information Systems
  • CRA, CRA-e
  • ABET / CSAB
  • Anita Borg Institute
  • National Center for Women in IT (NCWIT)
  • CSTA
  • The Computing Technology Industry Association
  • The Entertainment Software Association

2. How else can we use our professional societies?
  • Using professional societies to speak for the
    discipline.
  • Who else needs to be part of the CPATH community
    conversation?
  • ABET?
  • Others?

9
How other disciplines use their professional
organizations
  • American Association of Physics Teachers
  • 15M over last 10 years.Example Enhancing STEM
    Student Learning through Faculty Development
Workshops for New Physics and Astronomy Faculty
(471K, CCLI Phase 3)ComPADRE Pathway for
    Physics and Astronomy Education (2.8M)12,000
    members

10
How other disciplines use their professional
organizations
  • American Physical Society
  • 8M over last 10 years.Example PhysTECH Noyce
    Scholars (750K)46,000 members

How other disciplines use their professional
organizations
  • American Chemical Society
  • 8.7M in last 10 years.Example ChemEd Digital

How other disciplines use their professional
organizations
  • Mathematical Association of America

    3)25,000 members

13
ACM
  • Slightly less than 2M in NSF awards (more than
    1M to CSTA)92,000 members

14
Discussion
  • What should we be sure to address in our response
to RAGS?Who (different) should be invited?
  • Do you want ACM (or IEEE CS, or ABET) to organize
computing community efforts? In what areas? To do
    what?
