Jaguars

2
Appearance
  • A jaguars spots are circular with a black dot
inside the circle. Jaguars and leopards are
    difficult to tell apart.

3
Appearance
  • A jaguar has a very muscular body. It has a large
head, thick neck, short legs, and a long tail. A
male jaguar weighs from 120 to 200 pounds.
Females weigh 80 to 100 pounds.

4
Habitat
  • Jaguars live in South America, and Mexico.
Jaguars used to live in the United States in
Arizona, New Mexico, southern California and
Texas. Now it is not likely to see a jaguar north
of Mexico. The jaguars favorite home or habitat
is a dark, wet tropical forest. Some jaguars live
in the mountains of Peru. Jaguars that live in
    Mexico live in the desert.

5
Hunting
  • Jaguars usually travel and hunt alone, except for
females with cubs. Most jaguars hunt at night.
Usually a jaguar hunts on the ground and creeps
almost like a snake toward its prey.

6
Prey
  • The jaguar may have the most powerful jaws of any
cat. Jaguars often kill by biting through their
victims skull. Jaguars can kill large animals
like tapirs, which they hide for later meals. A
tapir is an animal that looks like a large pig.
They also kill small animals like turkeys,
    armadillos, fish and turtles.

7
How Powerful They Are
  • The jaguar has very powerful jaws and is much
stronger than the mountain lion. It can drag a
full grown cow for a mile or more!
  •

8
Cubs
  • Baby jaguars may be born at any time in South
America. In northern areas, they are born in the
summer. A female jaguar has one to four cubs at a
time. They are born in the shelter of bushes,
rocks or trees. Cubs begin to grow up on their
mothers milk and meat that she brings to them.
The cubs follow their mother when they are just
six weeks old. Jaguars probably stay with their
mother for up to two years.

9
Where Jaguars Live
  • The jaguar is an endangered species in the United
States. It still survives in Mexico and South
    America.
