The Lifecycle of the Butterfly

• The female butterfly lays her eggs
• The eggs hatch
• Hungry caterpillars emerge
• Caterpillars eat from specific plants
• Very fat caterpillars form a chrysalis
• Metamorphosis occurs
• A beautiful butterfly is born

Butterfly Migration

• Butterflies emerge from their chrysalis
• They dry their wings
• They eat nectar over the hot summer months
• When the cool weather comes, they migrate

Where do they go?

• Butterflies migrate to warm climates
• Texas
• California
• Mexico
• Florida.

Butterflies Return

• On their trip they will mate
• When they return to their hatching place, the
  female will lay her eggs on a leaf of a special
  plant.
• In the spring, butterflies will journey back to
  the place where they hatched from their eggs.

• Before they fly they must go through an awkward
  caterpillar stage
• They wrap themselves in a silky cocoon
• When they come out, they are magnificent!
