Illegal Botox Injection
  • Botox also known as botulinumtoxin, was first
created in 1973 for therapeutic purposes. It is a
    safe, non-invasive treatment with minimal
downtime and pain. However, as Dr.Torgerson, a
plastic surgeon from Toronto states, Botox, The
10 minute treatment is rapid and consists only of
a few mini injections. Like most cosmetic
procedures, needs to be administered by a
    certified health care practitioner. Cosmetic
treatments are available at Dr. Cory Torgerson's

  • The FDA approved Botox injections in 2002 as a
treatment for cosmetic purposes. Over the last
decades, it has become the top treatment for fine
lines and wrinkles. Unfortunately, because it is
a non-surgical treatment, some people think that
it does not require a plastic surgeon or a
certified health care practitioner to perform the
procedure. However, what most people are not
aware of, is that, it can become very dangerous
very fast if not administered properly by a
plastic surgeon, or if the Botox was imported
from another country and was not approved by
    Health Canada or the FDA.
  •
  • In November of 2004, the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) and the Offices of Criminal
    Investigation (OCI) launched an investigation
against the illegal uses of Botox. What sparked
the investigation was that four people were
    temporarily paralyzed after receiving treatment
in aesthetic spa in Oakland Park Florida they
were later diagnosed with botulism poisoning.
  • OCI and the FDA launched an in-depth
investigation that led to the conviction of 29
individuals with the illegal use of Botox.

How people are misled?
  • Firstly, Botox needs to be administered in a
clean and sterile environment. Not all spas that
offer Botox at discounted rates undergo or follow
the same rigorous inspections and guidelines as a
    surgical doctors clinic.
  •
  • Secondly, only Health Canada or FDA approved
Botox products should be administered. As in the
case of Oakland Park Florida, patients were
injected with a lower quality imported Botox.
  •
  • There are many risks associated with illegal
    Botox injections, such as
  •
  • Severe muscle weakness in injected area.
  • Headaches.
  • Respiratory problem due to weakening of
    muscles.
  • Severe flu like symptoms.
  • Problem Swallowing.
  • Permanent to temporary penalization (botulism
    poisoning)
  • Change of voice (dysphonia)
  • Trouble speaking (dysarthria)
  • Loss of bladder control

4
  • To get the best results, individuals should
always consider Botox injections from a trained
and qualified healthcare professional or a board
certified plastic surgeon. When meeting with a
plastic surgeon all risks and outcomes are
    explained in greater detail.
