1
Hip-Hop's Influence on African American Consumer
Trends What would Dr. King say?
NWACCs Honors Program 2007 Martin Luther King J
r. Speaker
                    Dr. Joseph Seabrooks, Assist
ant Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs,
University of Arkansas Thursday, January 18, Noon
-115pm at White Auditorium

                                               U
sing a three-prong approach in his power point
presentation, Dr. Seabrooks played various
musical clips from well-known hip-hop artists,
such as Run DMC, Notorious B.I.G., Snoop Doggie
Dog, L.L. Cool J, and a host of others he then
projected the lyrics to show the connection
between materialism and "hip" jargon then
revealed in the third slide the amount of income
African Americans earned from 1979 when Hip-Hop
made its debut until 2005.
                       In his summary, Dr. Seabro
oks revealed the inordinate amount of that income
that was spent on somewhat trivial items, such as
jewelry--"bling, bling"--automobiles and auto
upkeep--"pads on wheels"--and hair care
products--"shine, shine"--among other
expenditures of materialism.  He concluded that,
unfortunately, many African Americans fall into
the trap of spending their hard-earned dollars on
items that drain their resources and, therefore,
keep them impoverished and at the mercy of
corporate exploitation.  The moral of the story
Don't spend your meager earnings on trivial
material things that do little to advance your
place in society and meet your educational and
spiritual needs.
For NWACC's 2007 celebration of Martin Luther
King Jr. Day, Dr. Joseph Seabrooks
presented, "Hip-Hop's Influence on African
American Consumer Trends What would Dr. King
Say?"  Clearly, as many of the students commented
afterward, he gave a tantalizing view of the role
of Hip-Hop on African American consumer culture.
