  • Bicycle and Pedestrian Plans for a Sustainable
    Community
  • Jan 31, 2007

2
Sustainability
  • Global
  • Can we minimize our ecological footprint?
  • Reduce fossil-fuel consumption / global warming?
  • Community
  • Maintain a small town feel in the face of rapid
    growth?
  • Accommodate more people in the same space?
  • Personal
  • Can we maintain our health and fitness?
  • Provide our kids with the opportunities for
recreation and independence that we grew up with?

3
Automobiles
  • Globally
  • transportation accounts for nearly 30 percent of
world energy use and 95 percent of global oil
    consumption
  • In our Communities
  • Isolate us from our neighbors and our
    environment
  • Traffic and parking are main complaints in
maintaining traditional town centers like the
    Oxford Square
  • Personally
  • Time spent driving is lost to us
  • In 1969 half of all children and 87 of kids who
lived within a mile walked or biked to school,
    today its less than 15

4
A Sustainable Solution - Walk or ride a bike
  • 40 of the Automobile trips in the US are 2 miles
    or less
  • 30-60 of 1985 trips in Beijing were by bicycle
    (falling)
  • 40 of trips in Amsterdam are by bike (rising)
  • President Bush wants to cut gasoline usage by
    20
  • E. O. Wilson is worried about the destruction of
biological diversity due to global warming

5
Walk / Bike / Drive
  • Trip time per 2 miles
  • 40 min on foot (at 3mph)
  • 12 min by bike (at 10 mph)
  • 4 min by car (at 30 mph) stops parking
  • Energy costs (WorldWatch Institute data)
  • 35 calories per mile bicycling
  • 100 calories per mile walking
  • 1860 calories per mile driving
  • (but the energy for the first 2 is renewable -
    dessert!)
  • Capacity (Persons per hour per one meter-width)
  • Bicycling 1500
  • Driving 170

6
Health contributions
  • Surgeon General suggests 30 to 60 minutes of
    exercise daily
  • United States
  • 1 of urban travel by bicycle
  • 30.6 of adults considered obese.
  • Netherlands
  • 28 of urban travel by bicycle
  • 10 obese
  • Coincidence?

7
Can we do it here?
  • Barriers to overcome
  • Community planning to facilitate human powered
    transportation
  • Safe, recreational places to build skills and
    confidence
  • Safe routes that connect city essentials
  • Education and promotion to overcome perceived
    barriers

8
Oxford, Mississippi
  • City residents in 2006 - 14,000
  • (up from 11,756 in 2000)
  • University enrollment in 2006 - 14,000
  • (up from 12,000 in 2004)
  • Total Area - 11. 65 sq miles
  • ( 3miles x 4 miles)
  • Annexation to increase area to 16 square miles
    and population to 18,000

Paved shoulders on County Roads
  • 4 ft Paved shoulders are recommended on high
traffic rural roadways in NC, SC, WI, OR
  • Safety - lower accident rates,
  • Provide space to make evasive maneuvers
  • Accommodate driver error
  • Add a recovery area
  • Provide space for disabled vehicles
  • Reduce passing conflicts between motor vehicles
    and bicyclists and pedestrians .
  • Capacity - carry more traffic,
  • Provide more intersection and safe stopping sight
    distance
  • Allow for easier exiting from travel lanes to
side streets and roads (also a safety benefit)
  • Provide greater effective turning radius for
    trucks
  • Maintenance -
  • Provide structural support to the pavement
  • Discharge water further from the travel lanes,
reducing the undermining of the base and
    subgrade.
