• Britain is home to the Eurasian otter (Lutra
  lutra) which can be found in our freshwater
  rivers and lakes, and on our coasts
• Coastal living otters are more active throughout
  the day
• River living otters are more active at night

Watching Otters

• Otters are secretive mammals
• Lots of patience (and sometimes luck) is needed
  if you are to see them
• And you will need to keep still and quiet

• They mark their territory with
• spraints, usually on prominent
• areas

• small mammals such as frogs

• If you are lucky enough to see an otter, or
  otters, it is important not to disturb them
• Watch them quietly and enjoy the excitement of
  observing otters in their world

What We Do

• IOSF runs a rehabilitation centre for injured and
  orphaned otters
• Adult otters stay at the
• centre until they are
• well enough to go back
• to the wild, but cubs
• stay until they are
• 12 15 months old,
• which is when they
• would naturally leave
• their mother

• IOSF supports projects to protect otters and
  their environment worldwide
• We have been involved with projects in Chile,
  Mexico, Canada, Kenya, Turkey, Spain, Belarus,
  Bangladesh, Uganda
• One of our major campaigns is against the trade
  in otter fur in Cambodia
