2
What is LEED?
  • LEED Leadership in Energy and Environmental
    Design
  • Developed by USGBC (U.S. Green Building Council)
    in conjunction with
  • DOE
  • EPA
  • GSA (U.S. General Services Administration)
  • Air Force, Army, Navy
  • States of CA, CT, IL, ME, MD, MA, MI, NJ, NY, OR,
    PA, WA

3
What is LEED?
  • The goals of the LEED program include
  • Reduced or neutralized first costs
  • Enhanced asset value/increased profits
  • Optimized life cycle economic performance
  • Economic benefits include
  • Improved productivity (due to a healthier indoor
    environment)
  • Reduced liability

4
Why Does It Matter?
  • Some states and cities offer tax incentives for
buildings that meet green building codes or
    become LEED certified.
  • GSA new building projects must meet LEED
    certification requirements
  • New York was the first state to implement a green
    building tax program
  • Up to 3.75 per square foot for interior work and
  • Up to 7.50 per square foot for exterior work
    against their state tax bill

5
Why Does It Matter?
  • Cook County, IL requires new county facilities
    to meet LEED Silver certification
  • Maryland has implemented a green building tax
credit and requires state buildings to meet LEED
    standards
  • Portland created a tailored version of LEED for
    city funded buildings
  • Seattle sets a LEED Silver level rating for city
    funded projects

6
Why Does It Matter?
  • San Mateo, CA requires buildings to be built to
    LEED standards
  • Los Angeles, CA requires new public works
    buildings to meet LEED standards
  • Arlington, MA requires LEED Silver certification
    on town owned buildings
  • The future is . . . (IMC?)

7
LEED Certifications
  • LEED-NC (new construction comml)
  • Complete and has been in use for four years
  • LEED-CI (commercial interiors)
  • LEED-EB (existing buildings)
  • LEED-CS (core and shell commercial)
  • LEED-H (single family residential)
  • LEED-ND (residential neighborhood developments)

In development
8
LEED-NC

Tranquility 27 (TT) SeriesClean Sheet Design
Approach
  • Goal Design a product using EarthPure HFC-410A
    refrigerant and the most advanced
    components to create
    the highest efficiency
    WSHP on the
    market.

17
Tranquility 27 Components
GE variable speed ECM fan motor
Oversized lanced fin / rifled tube
refrigerant-to-air coil
Large rifled tubing coaxial refrigerant-to-water
heat exchanger
Copeland UltraTech two-stage unloading scroll
compressor
TXV
18
Copeland UltraTech Scroll Compressor
  • Very high efficiencies at full load
  • Ultra high efficiencies on part load
  • Unique unloading capability allows shift on
    the fly
  • 67 capacity satisfies load 80-90 of the time,
    increasing annual efficiency

19
GE Variable Speed ECM Motor
  • Lower fan Watts during high speed operation
  • Even lower fan Watts during part load compressor
    operation
  • Extremely low Watts for fan only -- typically
    40-60 Watts
  • Helps increase EER/COP, but also decreases annual
operating costs due to significant runtime at
    part load and fan only

20
ARI / ISO Ratings
Far exceeds ASHRAE 90.1 and qualifies for
additional LEED points
21
