Mentoring Womens Scholars
Purpose The Department of Medicine recognizes
that faculty development is a vital element in
the pursuit of academic excellence and critical
to the long term growth and development of the
Department and its Faculty. Goal Enhance
careers of junior faculty Implementation
Faculty development committee has been appointed
to facilitate and monitor the policy in the DOM.
Committee can assist in finding a mentor, and can
also serve as a resource to the junior faculty
member and mentors in the Department. The
committee sets defined expectations for the
mentee, the mentor, and the division
director. Committee Members Dr. Ayad Jaffa,
Endocrinology Dr. Linda Obeid, Geriatrics Dr.
Rick Silver, Rheumatology Dr. Leonard Egede,
General Internal Medicine Dr. George Cooper,
Cardiology Dr. Paul McDermott, Cardiology Dr.
Darwin Bell, Nephrology All Junior Faculty must
select a mentor.

  • Expectations of the Mentee
  • Select a mentor
  • Select a basic, clinical or educational research
    project, and set progress milestones.
  • Meet with mentor quarterly to review milestones.
  • Develop a three year rolling career development
    plan
  • Publish at least 1 manuscript per year.
  • Present and attend at least one national meeting
    per year.
  • Participate in professional or not for profit
    organizations at the local and national level.
    Review for journals and grants.
  • Provide an annual report to the mentor

  • 1. Devote time and effort to the mentee.
  • Guide the mentee towards research, clinical and
    educational goals.
  • Identify internal/external funding
    opportunities/agencies
  • Introduce/nominate the mentee to professional
    groups/committees.
  • Assist mentee with their 3 year rolling career
    plan.
  • Assist mentee in interdepartmental/interuniversity
    collaborations.
  • Present mentor annual report to Division
    Director.
  • Expectations of the Division Directors
  • Include expectations of mentee/mentor in annual
    evaluations.
  • Forward annual reports to the mentorship committee

Basic and Clinical Research Seminar
SeriesWomens Scholars
  • PURPOSE Forum dedicated to research activities
    in the DOM
  • GOAL Discussions, suggestions, collaborations,
    and networking
  • FORUM Informal monthly sessions.
  • DATES/LOCATION Seminars are held the second
    Tuesday of each month in 300 CSB from 5-6PM.
  • NEXT SEMINAR Tuesday, October 14th. Dr. Mike
    Zile, MD from our Cardiology Division will
    discuss, Mechanisms that underlie chronic heart
    failure.
