What Value is added by Type II Label
Implementation through Partnerships is not a new
thing
  • Offers a platform for coordination
  • International exposure (WSSD Launching, CSD,
    International Forums, Websites)
  • Wider group of stakeholders involved (reflective
    of pillars of SD)
  • Long term goals, common benchmarks determined by
    interested partners (voluntary programmatic
    approach to efforts)
  • We know that it comes with the principles of SD

Development since WSSD
  • Initiatives Matrix (Facilitators, coordinating
    committee, interested partners, related
    Initiatives)
  • Developing a matrix showing development at all
    Levels
  • Road maps for further development
  • Milestones, Projects, Coordination mechanisms,
Contribution to MDGs, Agenda 21, BPoA, JPOI
  • Partnership interest further developed (Network
    created)
  • UN PIF Missions developed a Road Map of how to
market activities at the International level and
leverage resources, for activities under these
    Initiatives.
  • Initiative development, and lessons learnt, seen
as important input to the BPoA10 pacific
    preparations
  • Initiatives are taking their own development
    paths.

5
Some Examples
  • Developments related to the Water Initiative
  • 2 new projects funded and being implemented
    outside of traditional funding systems
  • Island Climate update newsletter
  • Hydrological technicians training
  • Developing an Inter-SIDS Pacific-Caribbean
programme for action on water and climate
  • NZ-US Climate accord and partnership programme
  • Currently discussing possibility of white water
to blue water project similar to that in the
    Caribbean
  • Example of inter-SIDS partnership initiatives
    directly benefiting the National level
  • Scavenger well trials project being piloted in
Majuro and some Caribbean Islands. The results of
which may be replicated in other SIDS

6
Examples Cont.
  • Developments with Energy Initiative
  • 2 projects have developed
  • Institutional capacity for energy planning and
    policy development(SOPAC)
  • People capacity building for utilities training
    (PPA)

These projects will directly assist PICs in
developing and implementing their National Energy
Policies and Plans
7
Waste Management
  • PALM 2003, Japan and PIF leaders identified
amongst other issues to jointly undertake
  • A priority focus on waste management, protection
and sustainable use of the environment and
    natural resources, global warming and
    vulnerability and disaster management.
  • Japan in collaboration with regional partners are
now developing a regional waste management
    strategy for the region.

8
Next Steps?
  • Umbrella Initiatives are now being recognized as
    platforms for coordination.
  • Refine NARs where needed, identify priorities
and look at opportunities to address these issues
    through these partnership mechanisms
  • Build bilateral, multilateral or sub-regional
partnerships on, or using, these umbrella
    initiative platforms
  • Strengthen or build on mechanisms (reflective of
3 pillars of SD) in country to promote
coordination of national initiatives (WSSD task
    forces)
  • Work towards providing a policy framework to
support that mechanism (NSDS, integration into
other national strategies, policys or plans)
