Description of Project

• Students will
• use the place where they live to understand the
  place of Pearl Harbor.
• use what they do know to discover what they do
  not know.
• collaborate with Hawaiian and Japanese students
  and interview WWII veterans.

• Grade Level 9th grade
• Subject U.S. History 9
• Time/Class Periods 4-5 Blocks (80 min)

Objectives

• Students will be able to
• Apply the five themes of geography to accurately
  describe where they live.
• Research the state of Hawaii, focusing on Oahu.
• Analyze historical events in the context of WWII.
• Discuss the common information and different
  perceptions of the events of Pearl Harbor and
  Hiroshima with students in class, Hawaii and
  Japan.

Lesson Outline

• Discuss the five themes of geography.
• Describe local area using themes.
• Lessons on WWII- European Theater.
• Describe Pearl Harbor- Hawaii using five themes.
• Email with Hawaiian students about local
  geography and history.
• Lessons on WWII- Pacific Theater.
• Interview of local WWII veterans.
• Interview- teleconference with Pearl Harbor
  survivors in Hawaii and Japanese students.

Assessment

• The final assessment will be a graded journal
  that each student will keep throughout the
  interactions and learning experiences with the
  Hawaiian students, Japanese students and WWII
  veterans.
