    the former British Singapore, both of which
    formed West Malaysia, and Sabah and Sarawak in
    north Borneo,
  • Area total 329,750 sq km land 328,550 sq km
    water 1,200 sq km
  • Climate tropical annual southwest (April to
    October) and northeast (October to February)
    monsoons
  • Natural resources tin, petroleum, timber,
    copper, iron ore, natural gas, bauxite
  • Religions Islam, Buddhism, Daoism, Hinduism,

Nations Pledge
  • Spain contributed 68 million.
  • Japan pledged rice and 30 million.
  • Britain pledged 28.9 million for the relief
    effort.
  • France announced 20.5 million in aid and said it
    was sending 60 tons of aid to Sri Lanka,
    Indonesia and the Maldives.
  • Australia would give another 19.5 million in
    aid, increasing its total pledge to 27.6
    million.
  • Germany also boosted its initial 2.7 million in
    emergency aid to 27 million.

  • It is now estimated that the destruction caused
    by the Tsunami (akin to that of a nuclear
    holocaust) has made 5 million people homeless and
    jobless.
  • The number of missing persons is said to be about
    500,000.
