What Is Nutrition?
  • There are 18 components of Nutrition
  • Each component plays a role in achieving and
    maintaining good Nutrition.

Food Labels
  • 1.) Serving Size/Servings per Container
    recommended amount to eat./How many servings the
    product contains (serving Sizes are a lot
    smaller than people realize)
  • 2.) Calories units of energy we receive after
    eating food, or drinking liquid. (All labels are
    calculated by a 2000 calorie/day diet.)
  • 3.) Total Fat fat, or adipose, comes from many
    foods. Some fat is good but too much can cause
    arteriosclerosis (clogged arteries), heart
    disease and other chronic diseases.
  • 4.) Cholesterol there are two types LDL and
    HDL. The HDL is the good cholesterol and the LDL
    is the bad cholesterol and is associated with
    heart disease. It is required to build and
    maintain cell membranes. Not soluble in the
    blood. (Doesnt brake down)
  • 5.) Sodium this is the amount of salt the
    product contains. We all need some sodium
    everyday but the majority of the country consumes
    entirely too much.

  • 6.) Total Carbohydrate Carbs. are the bodies
    first source of energy. The Food and
    Agricultural Organization and the World Health
    Organization recommend 55-75 dietary energy
    (Calories) comes from carbohydrates.
  • 7.) Dietary Fiber An indigestible part of plant
    foods that move through the digestive system and
    absorb water making bowel movements easier.
  • 8.) Sugars These need to be limited and are
    known as a bad carbohydrates. Sugar comes is
    either in sucrose (table sugar), lactose (milk
    sugar), or fructose (fruit sugar) form. Too much
    sugar is associated with type II Diabetes,
    obesity, and tooth decay.
  • 9.) Protein Large organic compounds called
    amino acids that are an essential part of almost
    every cell function. There are 20 different
    amino acids. Protein is known as the building
    block of life.
  • 10.) Daily Values displays vitamins, minerals,
    and information on estimated caloric intake for a
    2000 and 2500 calorie diet. All food labels use
    this as a guide to estimate their Daily Values.

Diet and ExerciseDefinitions
  • Diet the amount of food and what kind of food a
    person eats each day.
  • Exercise using ones body in an activity that
    develops or maintains physical fitness and
    overall health.
  • Physical Fitness the ability of the heart,
    blood vessels, lungs and muscles to function
    efficiently and effectively in work and leisure
    activities, maintaining overall wellness,
    resisting hypokinetic (sedentary) diseases, and
    meeting emergency situations.
  • Wellness Optimal health and vitality
    encompassing physical, emotional, environmental,
    spiritual, interpersonal/social, intrapersonal,
    intellectual well being.

  • Currently, about 119 million, or 64.5, of US
    adults are either overweight or obese.
  • There are about 3,500 calories per pound of body
    weight.
  • To help maintain a healthy weight, it is
    suggested to eat six small meals a day.
  • There are 4 calories/gram carbohydrate, 4
    calories/gram protein, 7 calories/gram alcohol, 9
    calories/gram fat.
