Title: Energy and Energy Transfer

1
Energy and Energy Transfer
2
Cars
  • What do cars use for energy
  • Gasoline
  • Will a car work without it?
  • NO!

3
What is the main source of energy for life on
earth?
  • The SUN!
  • No sun No life

4
Energy and Autotrophs
  • The energy from the sun is captured by autotrophs
    (producers) during photosynthesis and
  • stored in the form of carbohydrates (the plants
    food).
  • Carbohydrates store energy.

5
What would happen if all of the autotrophs died?
  • Heterotrophs cannot use the energy from the sun
directly so they rely on the energy stored in
    carbohydrates.
  • No autotrophs No life

6
(No Transcript)
7
  • Why would everything die?
  • Do you think this would include humans too?
  • Justify your answer.

8
Energy and Organisms
  • Living things need a constant supply of energy
    to
  • - grow
  • - move
  • - reproduce
  • - function everyday

9
Energy in an Ecosystem
  • Energy flows through an ecosystem in one
    direction, from the
  • sun autotrophs heterotrophs

10
Food Chains
  • Food chains show how energy flows from one
    organism to the next.
  • Each level in the food chain is called a trophic
    level.
  • Terrestrial ecosystems have 3 or 4 levels.

11
Food Chains
  • Given these organisms create a food chain.

Mouse
Hawk
Wheat
Snake
12
Producer
Primary Consumer
Secondary Consumer
Tertiary Consumer
13
Food Webs
  • A food web links all the food chains in an
    ecosystem together.

14
How much energy gets from one trophic level to
the next?
  • Only about 10 of the energy available within
one trophic level is transferred to organisms at
    the next trophic level.

15
Where does all the energy go?
1) Most of the energy is used by organisms
for their own body functions growing, moving,
reproducing. 2) The rest is lost as heat!!!
