    Clinical Center July 6, 1953.
  • In 1954 NIH Graduate School Program began.
  • In 2000 the International Human Genome Project
public Consortium assembled a working draft of
the Sequence of the Human Genome. The information
from the project was released to the world with
    no restrictions.

National Institutes of Health
  • NIH is currently comprised of 28 Institutes and
    Centers.
  • The well-known ones include the National Cancer
Institute, National Institutes of Allergy and
    Infectious Diseases,National Institute of Mental
Health as well as the National Human Genome
    Research Institute.

4
National Human Genome Research Institute
  • There is an Extramural and Intramural Division
    within NHGRI.
  • The Extramural Division entails the ELSI program
as well as the Grant Applications and Oversight
of the Grants to the sources outside of the NIH.
  • The Intramural Division is where actual research
    is conducted at NIH.

5
Division of Intramural ResearchNHGRI
  • There are six branches within the Intramural
    program at NHGRI
  • Cancer Genetics Branch
  • Medical Genetics Branch
  • Genome Technology Branch
  • Genetic Disease Research Branch
  • Genetics and Molecular Biology Branch
  • Inherited Disease Research Branch

6
Job Opportunities at NIH
  • Summer Internship Program in Biomedical Research
    Program ( SIP).
  • The NIH Undergraduate Scholarship Program.
  • The NIH Administrative Summer Program,
    non-scientific positions.
  • The Postbaccalaureate IRTA Fellowship Program.
  • The Graduate Partnership Program (GPP).
  • The NIH Academy for Graduate, Medical, and PhD
students, this is a very competitive program.

7
Summer Internship Program
  • SIP is open to full-time students in high school,
    college, and graduate school.
  • Participation in Biomedical Research in the
Intramural laboratories at NHGRI and other NIH
    Institutes.
  • The goal of this program is to expose students to
research procedures in a unique environment.
  • Stipend dependent on educational level, ranging
    from 1300 - 2400
  • Application process opens November 03.
  • On average there are anywhere between 600 - 1800

NIH Undergraduate Scholarship Program
  • This is a competitive program open to students
from disadvantaged backgrounds who wish to pursue
careers in biomedical, behavioral, and social
    science health related research.
  • Scholarships are provided up to 20,000 per year
which must be used for tuition, educational or
    living expenses.
  • Students must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher and be
able to spend 10 weeks during the summer at NIH.
