Fluke Networks Your Partner in Network Testing
2
  • Copper Testing Standards Update

3
Types of Standards
  • Component specifications
  • Define performance and grades of cables,
    connectors and hardware
  • Example ANSI/TIA/EIA 568-B.2
  • Installed Link Specifications
  • Permanent Link and Channel
  • Example ANSI/TIA/EIA 568-B.1
  • Network Technology Standards (Applications)
  • Define performance requirements for all elements
    of a the network
  • Example IEEE 802.3

4
Developments in Cabling Requirementsfor 10
Gigabit Ethernet
  • The IEEE 802.3an committee is studying the
implementation for 10 Gigabit Ethernet over
    twisted-pair copper cabling (10GBASE-T)
  • Several companies are actively participating in
the study of medium performance parameters and
    transmission requirements to support 10GBASE-T
  • This high-performance cabling system will require
    a high-performance field tester
  • Increased frequency range (1 to 500 MHz)
  • Higher accuracy specification (Accuracy Level
    IIIe and IV)
  • Capable of supporting Alien Crosstalk measurements

5
10GBASE-T
  • IEEE 802.3an task force has delegated study of
the physical medium to TIA and ISO/IEC workgroups
  • The signal-to-noise ratio budget analysis is
complex and consists of two components
  • In-channel requirements for all parameters, are
initially set to ISO/IEC 11801 Class E limits,
    extended to 500 MHz
  • Between-Channel crosstalk requirements are
becoming very important in the Signal-to-Noise
    Ratio
  • Referred to as Alien Crosstalk
  • Also known as Alien NEXT or Alien FEXT

6
Alien Crosstalk
  • Crosstalk induced in a wire-pair in the (victim)
cable by wire-pairs in adjacent cables
    (disturbers) in the bundle
  • General rules
  • This crosstalk is worst between wire-pairs with
    the same twist rate
  • The effect is greater if cables stay in parallel
    at the link ends
  • Impact increases with the distance over which the
    cables run in parallel
  • Impact increases with the frequency of the
    transmitted signals

7
Development Status of 10 Gigabit Ethernet
  • IEEE 802.3an 10GBASE-T standard
  • Expected to pass June-July 2006
  • Includes references to TIA and ISO/IEC for
    physical medium
  • A single testing methodology for field testing of
Alien Crosstalk will be included in TIA, ISO and
IEEE as the only standards-compliant methodology
for field testing of Alien Crosstalk

8
Status on TIA and ISO
  • ANSI/TIA-TSB-155 Additional Guidelines for
    4-pair 100 O Category 6 Cabling for 10GBASE-T
    Applications.
  • This document creates the guidelines how Cat 6
links can be certified for the 10Gb/s Ethernet
    application.
  • Expected to pass Q3 2006.
  • ANSI/TIA/EIA-568-B.2-10 Transmission
    performance specifications for 4-pair 100 O
    augmented Category 6 cabling.
  • This amendment 10 defines a new cabling type
called Augmented Cat 6 abbreviated as Cat 6A.
  • Expected to pass Q1-Q2 2007
  • ISO/IEC 11801 Edition 2.1 (draft) Information
    Technology Generic cabling for customer
premises. (Draft document number ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC
    25 N 755.
  • This document will include the definition of
Augmented Class E and Augmented Class F cabling
    systems.
  • Expected to pass Q4 2006.
  • ISO/IEC 24750 Guidelines for support of
10GBASE-T over Copper Balanced pairs of Class E
and Class F as per ISO/IEC 118012002 and
    IEEE802.3an.
  • This is a Working Draft for an amendment to
    ISO/IEC 118012002.
  • Expected to pass Q1 2007

Cable Types Expected to Support 10GBASE-T

10Gig over Copper Solution for Field Testing
and Certification
11
Alien Crosstalk measurement methodsPair-To-Pair
Alien NEXT Measurements
  • The main and remote units are sitting
side-by-side at one end of the cabling bundle
    under test.
  • These units are plugged into different cables.
  • A standard patch cord connects the
synchronization of the Alien Crosstalk modules
plugged into each of the testers to allow the
testers to perform all of the pair-to-pair NEXT
measurements between the wire pairs of the two
    selected cabling links.

12
Alien Crosstalk measurement methodsPair-To-Pair
Alien FEXT Measurements
  • The main and remote units are plugged into
different cabling links at opposite ends of the
    bundle under test.
  • A spare channel in this bundle (not to be used as
disturber or victim) connects the synchronization
modules to allow the testers to perform all of
the pair-to-pair FEXT measurements between the
wire pairs of selected cabling links.

13
Field Testing Alien Crosstalk
  • Perform In-Channel certification using the
    appropriate test standard
  • IEEE 10GBASE-T, Cat 6A or ISO Class EA
  • Save the test results using results management
software and create a project file
  • Tester setup for PSANEXT
  • Insert the Alien Crosstalk modules in Main and
    Remote Cable Analyzer units
  • Connect main unit with USB cable to PC
  • Connect the testers as shown in previous slide
  • Plug terminators into victim and selected
    disturber links
  • Launch PSAXTalk software on PC and select cabling
    links to test
  • See next slide

14
Selection of Cabling Links in the Tests
  • Disturbed (or victim) linksSelect the longest
    links in the installation
  • Links with the highest Insertion Loss
  • IEC recommends to pick the 10 longest links
  • TIA recommends to pick the 6 longest links
  • Identify the bundles to which these longest links
    belong
  • All links in these bundles should be used as
    disturbers in calculating the PSAXTalk
    performance
  • This is an important argument to keep the number
of links in each bundle relatively small
  • In addition, verify that all cables in adjacent
panel jacks have been included in the test as
    well
  • If they have not, they should be added to the
    list of disturbers
