2Handwashing for Infection Control
Most infections are spread through
direct or indirect contact. Infection control
techniques focus on killing or blocking direct or
indirect contact with germs so they cant cause
harm or illness. There are 4 important infection
control practices for Caregivers Handwashing
the Number 1 way to prevent the spread of
infection Wearing gloves Cleaning and
disinfecting the environment Keeping up with
needed immunizations When should you wash your
hands??? Before contact with a resident,
starting work, eating, preparing food, putting on
gloves After contact with a resident, using the
restroom, removing gloves/PPE, contact with body
fluids/contaminated items, blowing your nose or
sneezing, cleaning, smoking or handling pets

- S.W.I.P.E.S is a word to help you remember
important steps to perform in any personal care
task - S - gather supplies before starting the task
- W Wash your hands before and after contact with
a resident - I Identify yourself by telling the resident
your name - P Provide privacy throughout care with a
curtain, screen or door - E Explain what you are doing to the resident
- S Scan the area to be sure everything is back
in place after you have done - the task
- Lets wash our hands!

- Turn on faucet
- Wet hands
- Apply soap
- Wash vigorously for 15 seconds
- Rinse
- Dry
- Turn off faucet using paper towel
- Dispose of paper towel
- Lets wash our hands together
5Use of Gloves in Infection Control
- You should wear disposable gloves when you
- Have direct skin contact with blood, body fluids,
or mucous membranes - Handle things contaminated with such as tissues,
germs, soiled disposable briefs, or soiled
clothing or linens - Provide first aide
- Have contact with a resident that has an open
wound - Clean-up body fluids
- Assist a resident with toileting or other
personal hygiene tasks - Cleaning up dirty dishes or utensils after meals
- Have a cut, scrape, chapped hands or dermatitis
- Make sure the gloves are latex or vinyl, inspect
them for tears or holes prior to putting them on,
use them only one time and throw away, change
gloves between tasks

- Steps to remove disposable gloves
- Pinch the glove of the first palm
- Pull first glove off
- Place fingers under cuff of second glove
- Pull second glove inside out
- Dispose of gloves (in a non-resident garbage
container) - Wash hands
- Lets practice removing our gloves
7Use of Gloves in Infection Control
- If you have a latex sensitivity or allergy you
need to talk with your supervisor so you can be
provided with non-latex gloves - As a Caregiver you need to be aware of the
residents possible reaction to the use of
gloves. Their use may make them feel as though
you think they are dirty or contaminated. Make
sure you explain that gloves like hand washing
are used to protect them from contamination/spread
of infection and that all residents are treated
in the same way so they dont feel badly.
