• Since 1986, VICS has worked to improve the
  efficiency and effectiveness of the entire supply
  chain. VICS initial accomplishments were
• Pioneered Quick Response (QR) as a cross-industry
  standard to simplify the flow of product and
  information for retailers and manufacturers alike

• Identified implemented the U.P.C. as the one
  product ID standard throughout the General
  Merchandise industry
• Developed the Serialized Shipping Container Code
  (SSCC)
• From the ANSI X12 EDI standards, identified
  implemented what is known today as VICS EDI

Current Activities VICS Committees

• Collaborative Network for Merchandise Flow
• Combined Logistics and Floor-Ready Merchandise
  (FRM) into this new committee
• This will lead us to a new model for committee
  work, where we expect most of the actual work
  will be done off line, by sub groups
• Key sub-committees will include Global Logistics
  Management (GLM), eCollaborative Transportation
  Management (eCTM), Direct to Consumer (D2C), DC
  Bypass (DCB) and Trading Partner Alignment and
  Compliance (TPAC)
• The FRM committees will be sunsetted until such
  time as there are projects that require time and
  attention.

• Global Logistics Management Electronic
• Collaborative Transportation Management Sub
  Committees
• These sub committees have completed a substantial
  amount of work in 07. GLM is well on the way to
  finalizing the GLM model, which will be shared
  with the GS1 Global Forum. We will collaborate
  with GS1 in finalizing a Global Interoperability
  model that will have applicability to global
  logistics practices, save for country specific
  customs requirements.

  Collaborative Transportation Management Sub
  Committees (continued)
• The eCTM committee is in the process of
  completing a number of Business Implementation
  Guidelines which apply to mission critical EDI
  transaction sets. The BIGs clearly define the
  information that must be communicated, and the
  timing, which meet both buyer and seller
  information requirements.
• Both the GLM and eCTM committees are to be
  commended for their commitment, effort and
  results.

Its Not As Simple As Moving Freight

• With an emphasis on decreasing costs and
  increasing profit margins, retailers are focused
  on driving out non-core costs.
• Transportation has long been a key focus for many
  larger retailers.
• Its no longer simply a matter of moving goods
  from a warehouse to a store.
• Retailers demand more accuracy and reliability
• and want ever increasing visibility throughout
  the supply chain

Collaboration Requires Technology

• Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) has been a
  business requirement for the automotive,
  chemical, electronics, grocery, insurance,
  retail, transportation, and utility industries
  for more than 20 years.
• EDI is the most widely used form of cross
  industry application-to-application exchange of
  business transactions and data.
• EDI has become a major component in todays
  collaborative supply chain.
• Major retailers, OEMs and other customers demand
  it of their vendors and suppliers who in turn
  pass the requirement along to their vendors and
  suppliers.
• It is imperative that businesses large and small
  provide a reliable EDI environment and seamless
  functionality.
• EDI is no longer just a business advantage
• it s a business requirement.
