As of April, 2005 From IEEE Communities
15
Membership Services Committee
Challenge for the Future
Problem Loss of graduating student members There
are currently 1371 student members
worldwide (Fewer IEEE members are joining
societies, and fewer students are renewing
society membership) MTT lost six percent of
students from 2004 to 2005 Students Are Our
Future Membership costs for MTT and IEEE can be
a shock Avg. of 35.60 S rate vs 148.00 M
rate Publications easily available
on-line Popularity of IEEE Xplor program Other
intangible membership benefits not sold
16
Stemming the Ebb-Tide
  • Better communicate value of networking and other
    intangibles
  • Involve university faculty, especially MTT
    members as mentors and collaborators
  • Improve communication with students
  • Local chapters should take a more proactive role
in cultivating students (Local Chapters - is
    where the action is)
  • Advertise DML Speaker Bureau presentations and
    participation in our membership booth
  • Increase awareness of MTT Forums Ask an expert

17
Membership Services Committee
  • Another Challenge
  • Statistics show that higher-grade members are
more likely to retain Society memberships.

18
Encourage Membership Grade Elevation
  • MTT has 347 Fellows worldwide
  • Region 9 has no active Fellows! Average over
regions is 3 Region 9 should have seven
    Fellows
  • There are 1,525 MTT Senior Member
  • 7,400 members over ten years Less 3,470 in
other categories (A, LF, LM) Equals 3,930
eligible for Senior Member Application has never
    been easier

19
Student Membership Development
  • George Ponchak

20
Number Student Members by Region as of May 2005
21
Student Membership Comparisons 04 to 05
  • Of 11 societies with gt7500 members, the average
is 11 of society is students.
  • MTT-S has slightly greater percentage students
    11.3.
  • Overall, IEEE is 20 student members

22
Student Membership Comparisons 04 to 05
Computer Society added 1300 students
  • MTT-S has maintained our student membership
numbers better than most societies and IEEE
    overall.

23
Number of Students at Recent Grade
14.6 of student members have been students for 6
years or more.
  • Some students need to find new professors
  • Discussion about time in grade or a new grade for
professional students may be beneficial in
    converting to full membership.

24
Observations/Activities
  • MTT-S is doing well at recruiting and maintaining
    our student members.
  • I sent an email to every student member
congratulating them on completion of school year
responses were questions about scholarships and
    publications.

25
MTT-S MembershipChapter Coordinator Report
  • MTT-S AdCom MEETING
  • June 12th, 2005
  • James C. Weiler
  • j.c.weiler_at_ieee.org

26
Chapter Reporting Awards
  • L31 Reports filed on-line are available for
    review to all IEEE officers.
  • Outstanding Chapters could be identified by the
L31 review of Web based record. Nomination form
    prepared by Regional Coordinators.

27
ISSUES
  • Joint chapters are often chaired by non-MTT-S
member. Do not expect that they are presenting a
    MTT-S oriented technical program.
  • Leadership turnover needs to have a MTT-S member
in the chapter committee each year.
  • MTT-S outreach to chapters is required. DML, TC
Speakers Ready Made Workshops. Do not only
reach out by requesting reporting information.

28
Membership Recruiting
  • IEEE Membership Freshmen Orientation, make IEEE
membership appear mandatory for each Electrical
Engineering student entering college as part of
    orientation week.
  • Chapter University Joint Meetings, if local
University has a Microwave program then mix
MTT-S members with students so they can
understand industry. Hand out IEEE Student
    Membership applications with MTT-S box
    pre-checked.
  • Applications Available at every chapter meeting.
Make sure every MTT-S Chapter has current
membership applications and the MTT-S brochure
available to hand to non-members who attend.
  • Engineering Management Support required to
encourage working engineers to attend local
    chapter meetings.
