CHAPTER ONEAbout Us
11
How it all began
  • Once upon a time, a 7-year-old boy from
Phoenix, Arizona, was diagnosed with Leukemia.
The little boy, named Chris, wished to become a
police officer. The Arizona Department of Public
Safety teamed together to help make Chris wish
come true. With the help from friends and family,
Chris became the first honorary state trooper in
history, which included his own helmet, goggles,
    badge, regulation uniform (tailored especially
for him) and a helicopter ride!

12
Make-A-Wish Foundation
  • Chris family and friends decided to create the
Make-A-Wish Foundation in his memory, enabling
his legacy to continue. Now, the Make-A-Wish
Foundation is the largest wish granting
    organization in the world!

13
National History
  • There are over 50 Make-A-Wish Foundation chapters
nationwide bringing hope, strength and joy to
children struggling with the challenges of living
    with life-threatening medical conditions.

14
Our Chapter History
  • The Sacramento Northeastern California chapter
of the Make-A-Wish Foundation was founded in
    1983.
  • Since that time, the chapter has granted more
    than 3,000 Wishes.
  • All funds raised are used to fulfill our mission
in the 24 Northeastern counties we serve.

Our Volunteers!
19
Our Volunteers
  • Internationally, there are over 25,000 volunteers
that partner with the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
  • Our chapter consists of over 1,200 volunteers.
  • Over 200 volunteers have trained to become Wish
volunteers, serving closely with our Wish
    families.

20
Our Wish Children
  • Any child between the ages of 2 ½ and
18 years, who has been diagnosed with a
    life-threatening medical condition, may be
    eligible for a wish.

21
Our Wish Children Cont.
  • Children who are eligible for a wish are referred
to us by one of the following sources
  • Medical professionals treating the child,
including doctors, nurses, social workers and
    child-life specialists.
  • A parent or legal guardian of the child.
  • The potential wish child.

22
Our Wish Families
  • The financial status of a childs family is never
a factor in eligibility, thus no child who meets
our criteria is ever denied his or her wish.

23
Types of Wishes
  • Although every wish is unique, wishes usually
fall into one of the following four categories as
    seen previously.
  • I wish to go
  • I wish to be
  • I wish to meet
  • I wish to have

24
Granting Wishes
  • Our chapter is proud to grant an increasing
number of wishes with every passing year.

25
Cost of a Wish
  • A wish may be as simple as a birthday party or as
elaborate as a trip to Hawaii.
  • Given this variety the average cost of a wish is
    6,000

  • True and False! While children must be between
the ages of 2 ½ and 18-years-old, they do not
need to be diagnosed with a terminal condition in

Funding Wishes
  • Granting wishes is made possible through the
partnership between our staff, donors and
volunteers like you. With combined efforts,
proceeds from fundraising events continue to
fulfill the dreams of many children.

41
Internal Events
  • An internal event is a fundraising event planned
and implemented by our Make-A-Wish Foundation
staff. Although other companies and community
corporations may sponsor the event, our
volunteers are an essential component to the
success of planning and helping with day of event
    support.

42
External Events
  • An external event is a fundraising event planned
and implemented by an individual or organization
outside of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Once the

Chapter ThreeVolunteer Opportunities
64
A Word About Attire
  • Volunteers will be informed of appropriate attire
to be worn to the events for which they
    volunteer. Most events require weather-appropriate
pants and a Make-A-Wish t-shirt that is provided
    for the event.
  • More formal events, such as Wishmakers Ball and
the Winter Wine and Food Fest, allow our
volunteers the option of either dressing formal
or wearing black slacks with a white dress shirt.

65
Volunteer Opportunities
  • Planning Committee
  • Most of our internal events that feature a
silent or live auction require a team of
volunteers who are willing to find and secure
sponsorships and auction items. Volunteers are
also needed to help with the logistics for
    specific events.

66
Volunteer Opportunities
  • Set-up Crew
  • Every event needs dedicated volunteers to help
set up for the festivities. Set up may include
    setting tables, organizing auction items,
decorating, unloading boxes or setting out
chairs. Our set-up crew really sets the
atmosphere to be experienced by the event
    attendees.

67
Volunteer Opportunities
  • Event Support
  • Event support can be a wide variety of tasks
depending on each event. Event supporters often
assist with greeting, coat check, food
    distribution, photography, monitoring auction
items, answering phones to take pledges and
selling raffle tickets during the event.

Raffle
Raffle
68
Volunteer Opportunities
  • Clean-up Crew
  • What goes up must come down! Every event needs
several volunteers to help clean up and load.
Tasks may include stacking chairs, loading boxes,
breaking down tables and tents and loading the
    truck.

69
Volunteer Opportunities
  • Office Support
  • Our office greatly benefits from volunteers
who donate their time and talent to
administrative purposes. Whether you volunteer in
a specific department or provide general
assistance, help is needed in data entry, filing,
phone calling, packet preparations, research and
    bulk mailing projects.

70
Volunteer Opportunities
  • Airport Greeters
  • Many times wish families from other chapters are
sent into our territory to receive their wish.
Volunteers take the time to greet these families
at the airport to offer the family assistance
with their luggage and car rental process. The
volunteer is simply a friendly face to say
Welcome, Im here to help! This eases any
travel anxieties while building excitement and
    anticipation of the wish.

71
Volunteer Opportunities
  • Scrapbookers
  • Wish children and their families
    are encouraged to take pictures
while on their wish and then send them to us upon
their return. Scrapbook volunteers donate their
time, talent and materials to create a book of
memories using these photos for the family to
    cherish and remember forever.

72
Volunteer Opportunities
  • Wish Volunteers
  • Wish volunteers work in pairs to visit a wish
child and their family. They interview the wish
child and gather pertinent information to enable
the wish to be granted. In order to become a Wish
Volunteer, you must be at least 21 years old,
attend a four to six hour wish class training,
complete a fingerprint background check and
    complete application paperwork.
