Title: The Lord's Supper

1
The Lord's Supper
  • A Fourfold Look

2
When eating the Lords Supper
  • We should look upward.
  • That is, we should direct our attention to
heaven, where Christ, who instituted it, is
    partaking of it with us.

3
1 Corinthians 1123
  • For I received from the Lord that which I also
delivered to you that the Lord Jesus on the same
night in which He was betrayed took bread and
when He had given thanks, He broke it and said,
"Take, eat this is My body which is broken for
you do this in remembrance of Me."

4
Matthew 2629
  • "But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit
of the vine from now on until that day when I
drink it new with you in My Father's kingdom."

5
Mark 1425
  • "Assuredly, I say to you, I will no longer drink
of the fruit of the vine until that day when I
drink it new in the kingdom of God."

6
Luke 2217-18
  • Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said,
"Take this and divide it among yourselves for I
say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the
vine until the kingdom of God comes."

7
When eating the Lords Supper
  • We should look upward.
  • That is, we should direct our attention to
heaven, where Christ, who instituted it, is
    partaking of it with us.
  • We should also direct our attention to the
Father, giving thanks for the bread and fruit of
    the vine.

8
Matthew 2626-27
  • And as they were eating, Jesus took bread,
blessed and broke it, and gave it to the
disciples and said, "Take, eat this is My body."
Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave
it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you."

9
Mark 1422-23
  • And as they were eating, Jesus took bread,
blessed and broke it, and gave it to them and
said, "Take, eat this is My body." Then He took
the cup, and when He had given thanks He gave it
to them, and they all drank from it."

    the vine.
  • And we should direct our attention to the Son,
    giving thanks in His name.

11
Colossians 317
  • And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in
the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God
    the Father through Him.

1 Corinthians 1124-25
  • For I received from the Lord that which I also
delivered to you that the Lord Jesus on the same
night in which He was betrayed took bread and
when He had given thanks, He broke it and said,
"Take, eat this is My body which is broken for
you do this in remembrance of Me." In the same
manner He also took the cup after supper, saying,
"This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This
do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of
    Me."

20
When eating the Lords Supper
  • We should look backward.
  • We should also look back to the mental anguish He
bore in the garden and on the cross.

21
Matthew 2636-38
  • Then Jesus came with them to a place called
Gethsemane, and said to the disciples, "Sit here
while I go and pray over there." And He took with
Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and He
began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed. Then
He said to them, "My soul is exceedingly
sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch
    with Me."

22
Matthew 2639-41
  • He went a little farther and fell on His face,
and prayed, saying, "O My Father, if it is
possible, let this cup pass from Me
nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will."
Then He came to the disciples and found them
asleep, and said to Peter, "What? Could you not
watch with Me one hour? Watch and pray, lest you
enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is
willing, but the flesh is weak."

23
Matthew 2642-44
  • Again, a second time, He went away and prayed,
saying, "O My Father, if this cup cannot pass
away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be
done." And He came and found them asleep again,
for their eyes were heavy. So He left them, went
away again, and prayed the third time, saying the
    same words.

24
Mark 1432-34
  • Then they came to a place which was named
Gethsemane and He said to His disciples, "Sit
here while I pray." And He took Peter, James, and
John with Him, and He began to be troubled and
deeply distressed. Then He said to them, "My soul
is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay
    here and watch."

25
Mark 1435-36
  • He went a little farther, and fell on the ground,
and prayed that if it were possible, the hour
might pass from Him. And He said, "Abba, Father,
all things are possible for You. Take this cup
away from Me nevertheless, not what I will, but
    what You will."

26
Mark 1437-39
  • Then He came and found them sleeping, and said to
Peter, "Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not
watch one hour? Watch and pray, lest you enter
into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing,
but the flesh is weak." Again He went away and
prayed, and spoke the same words.

27
Mark 1440-42
  • And when He returned, He found them asleep again,
for their eyes were heavy and they did not know
what to answer Him. Then He came the third time
and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and
resting? It is enough! The hour has come behold,
the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands
of sinners. Rise, let us be going. See, My
    betrayer is at hand."

28
Luke 2239-42
  • Coming out, He went to the Mount of Olives, as He
was accustomed, and His disciples also followed
Him. When He came to the place, He said to them,
"Pray that you may not enter into temptation."
And He was withdrawn from them about a stone's
throw, and He knelt down and prayed, saying,
"Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away
from Me nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be
    done."

29
Luke 2243-46
  • Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven,
strengthening Him. And being in agony, He prayed
more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great
drops of blood falling down to the ground. When
He rose up from prayer, and had come to His
disciples, He found them sleeping from sorrow.
Then He said to them, "Why do you sleep? Rise and
pray, lest you enter into temptation."

30
Luke 2335-38
  • And the people stood looking on. But even the
rulers with them sneered, saying, "He saved
others let Him save Himself if He is the Christ,
the chosen of God." The soldiers also mocked Him,
coming and offering Him sour wine, and saying,
"If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself."
And an inscription also was written over Him in
letters of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew THIS IS THE
    KING OF THE JEWS.

31
Matthew 2746
  • And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a
loud voice, saying, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?"
that is, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken
    Me?"

32
When eating the Lords Supper
  • We should look backward.
  • We should also look back to the mental anguish He
bore in the garden and on the cross.
  • Finally, we should look back at the awful price
that was paid for the sins of the world,
    including yours and mine.

33
1 Peter 117-19
  • And if you call on the Father, who without
partiality judges according to each one's work,
conduct yourselves throughout the time of your
stay here in fear knowing that you were not
redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or
gold, from your aimless conduct received by
tradition from your fathers, but with the
precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without
    blemish and without spot.

34
1 Peter 220-23
  • For what credit is it if, when you are beaten for
your faults, you take it patiently? But when you
do good and suffer, if you take it patiently,
this is commendable before God. For to this you
were called, because Christ also suffered for us,
leaving us an example, that you should follow His
steps "Who committed no sin, Nor was deceit
found in His mouth" who, when He was reviled,
did not revile in return when He suffered, He
did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him
    who judges righteously

35
1 Peter 224-25
  • who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the
tree, that we, having died to sins, might live
for righteousness--by whose stripes you were
healed. For you were like sheep going astray, but
have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of
    your souls.

36
When eating the Lords Supper
  • We should look forward.
  • That is, we should eat in anticipation of
  • the return of Jesus Christ
  • the resurrection unto life
  • receiving our inheritance
  • being forever with the Lord

37
1 Corinthians 1126
  • For as often as you eat this bread and drink this
cup, you proclaim the Lord's death till He comes.

38
Acts 19-11
  • Now when He had spoken these things, while they
watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received
Him out of their sight. And while they looked
steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold,
two men stood by them in white apparel, who also
said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up
into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up
from you into heaven, will so come in like manner
as you saw Him go into heaven."

39
John 528-29
  • Do not marvel at this for the hour is coming in
which all who are in the graves will hear His
voice and come forth--those who have done good,
to the resurrection of life, and those who have
done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.

40
1 Peter 13-5
  • Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has
begotten us again to a living hope through the
resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an
inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that
does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you,
who are kept by the power of God through faith
for salvation ready to be revealed in the last
    time.

41
1 Thessalonians 413-15
  • But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren,
concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you
sorrow as others who have no hope. For if we
believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so
God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.
For this we say to you by the word of the Lord,
that we who are alive and remain until the coming
of the Lord will by no means precede those who
    are asleep.

42
1 Thessalonians 416-18
  • For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven
with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and
with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ
will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain
shall be caught up together with them in the
clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we
shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort
    one another with these words.

43
When eating the Lords Supper
  • We should look inward, examining self, to make
sure we are looking upward, backward and forward.

44
1 Corinthians 1127-29
  • Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this
cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be
guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let
a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the
bread and drink of the cup. For he who eats and
drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks
judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord's
    body.
