3
What Is Anastasia
  • A Proposal Submitted in March 2004 for an EC 6th
    Framework Integrated Project to Investigate,
    Prototype and Demonstrate Advanced Satellite
    Technologies for Navigation and Communications
    for Civil Aircraft.
  • Status - bid is being evaluated
  • 4 year project. Expected to start in Jan 2005.
  • This presentation just covers communication
    aspects

4
Scope of Communication Aspects
  • .work will concentrate on the design and
    implementation of a prototype, affordable
aeronautical satcom system that will meet the
    evolving European ATM requirements. (Objective
    1)
  • Evolving European ATM requirements primarily
    means NexSat
  • Affordable means based on existing or planned
space segment (eg Inmarsat BGAN). It is assumed
that civil aviation can not afford its own
    satellite system.
  • There is also a smaller amount of work on more
long term avionic research including multi
    frequency antennas. ( Objective 2).

Partners
  • Core Team
  • Thales-Avionics, Airbus, Dassault-Aviation, DLR
  • Partners in communication Work Package(WP4)
  • Airframers Airbus France, Airbus Deutschland,
  • Satellite operator Inmarsat

  • Industrials Astrium, Thales Avionics UK, EADS CCR

9
Main Technical Issues
  • Smallest aircraft for easy install
  • Is party line needed?
  • Call set up times (voice and data)
  • Repair times and consequent level of redundancy
  • Voice and data bandwidths and quality of service
  • TCPIP vs ATN

10
Inputs Needed From NexSat Steering Group to
Anastasia
  • Top level requirements to feed into WP2 (Needs
and Aircraft Requirements) by year end
  • WP2 is led by Airbus
  • Discussions between NexSat steering group and WP2
    are foreseen
  • Support for presenting the Anastasia architecture
    to ICAO etc

11
Outputs from Anastasia to NexSat Steering Group
  • Technical material
  • A demonstration of a next generation satcom
    system that meets NexSat requirements
  • A route to an implementation of NexSat

12
What Anastasia Is Not
  • It is not looking at the ground and air data
    applications/end systems.
  • It is not developing certifiable avionics
