37
Project Maths
  • Involves changes to what students learn in maths,
how they learn it, and how they will be assessed.
  • There is an increase in the amount of statistics
and probability to be studied at JC and LC. At
each level there is increased emphasis on student
understanding of the concepts, as well as on the
use of appropriate contexts and applications.
More active methodologies will be used to promote
better student engagement in maths classes and to
provide them with better insights into maths and
    it applications.

formulae and equations to be worked on. So
ability in maths and a facility with numbers
would be needed for these two.
  • Biology is more descriptive and involves a lot of
learning of names and terms and parts.

Thematic Brief 2011
  • The right to safe and clean drinking water.is
a human right that is essential for the full
enjoyment of the right to life (United Nations,
    July 2010).
  • There are growing concerns around the
    sustainable, efficient and socially responsible
supply, quality monitoring, conservation and use
    of water.

63
Thematic Brief 2011 (contd.)
  • With a focus on devices and technologies which
    can help address these concerns,
  • Design and make a model which addresses an area
or aspect of water supply, quality, conservation
or use that you have identified.
  • Project and folder executed in school from Oct
    March of Leaving Cert Year.

64
Thematic Brief 2011 (sample solutions)
  • Conservation
  • Grace has designed a timer system for a shower
which will switch on a warning light after 8 mins
and will switch off the water supply to shower
after 10 mins. Her project dealt with water
    conservation.
  • Tamryn made a sensor tap which switched on
automatically when someone placed their hands
under the tap. This is more effective than push
taps as they sometimes discharge too much or too
    little water.
  • Quality
  • Shona built a water treatment device which
treats and purifies water collected from roof and
makes it suitable for household use.
  • Use
  • Alice and Niamh made water generators which use
water to generate electricity to power a small
electrical system such as house / street lights.

form, texture and colour, are manufactured from a
    wide range of materials.

82
Student Assignment 2012 (contd.)
  • (A) Carry out a design investigation of fragrance
bottles in graphic format. Your investigation
should include an analysis of shape and form,
    features, themes, target market, presentation,
etc. that inspire modern fragrance bottle design.
  • and
  • (B) Show graphically how you would physically
modify an existing fragrance bottle to improve
    its overall design.
  • or
  • Develop and graphically communicate a new
concept design for a fragrance bottle based on a
selected theme. Your design should consider the
message that is to be conveyed to the consumer.
