    Spanish speaking countries.
  • It is celebrated across the whole of Spain.
  • It is celebrated by all ages.

When is el carnaval?
  • El carnaval can last from one to three weeks!
  • It takes place in February, before lent.
  • It is a chance for the people of Spain to let
    their hair down and celebrate before the days of
    fasting begins.

Where did el carnaval originate from?
  • Rome was a major influence on Spain.
  • El carnaval is an adaptation of the Italian
    solstice celebration Saturnalia

  • In groups, you will prepare masks and a dance for
    our class carnaval!

  • This is what we will be dancing to, as we parade
    around the hall.
  • Think about how the music makes you feel!
  • Do you visualise any colours? Shapes? Animals?

  • In your groups, decide your carnaval theme this
    could be a particular colour, shape or an animal
  • Will all of your masks be identical, or will they
    be different within your chosen theme?

  • Design your masks on paper.
  • Make your masks!

The Dance
  • Think about the music. How does it make you
    feel? How does it make you want to move?
  • Consider dance moves we have practiced in PE.

  • REMEMBER we will be walking around the room as we
    dance, so keep it simple, but lively!
