  • You know that a phrase is a group of words used
    as a single unit. Prepositional phrases always
    act as modifiers.

  • A prepositional phrase that modifies a noun or
    pronoun is an adjective phrase.
  • It tells which, what kind, or how many.
  • Go to the beach near the road.
  • One of the lifeguards from the town will be
    there.

  • A prepositional phrase that modifies a verb, and
    adjective, or an adverb is an adverb phrase.
  • An adverb phrase tells how, when, where, or to
    what extent.
  • We went on the ferry.
  • The meet us later in the afternoon.

  • You may use prepositional phrases either before
    or after the words they modify as long as the
    meaning of the sentence is clear.
  • Sometimes another word or phrase comes between
    the modified word and the prepositional phrase.
  • The lone runner jogged steadily along the
    deserted beach.

  • To be clear, you should always place an adjective
    phrase next to the word it modifies.
  • Place an adverb phrase as close as possible to
    the word or words it modifies, or place it at the
    beginning or end of the sentence.
  • Unclear- A man rescued a dog in a rowboat.
  • Clear- A man in a rowboat rescued a dog.

  • Cod is a kind of local fish.

    visitors.
  • 6. Each year, many foreign tourists come to Cape
    Cod.

    the mainland in the summer.
  • 13. Because of the weather, few people visit the
    island during the cold months of winter.
  • 14. You can reach the island only by boat or
    plane.
