1
Christianity and Medieval Society
2
The Church Shapes Politics and Societies
  • Clergy- The officials of a church. Very
influential people in medieval times European
    culture.
  • Society- life revolved around the church. Key
events in peoples lives were weddings and
    baptisms.
  • Politics- advised local rulers. Became a major
    federal ruler.

3
Monks and Friars

The Monks of Cluny
  • Religious order- their lives were dedicated to
    religion with common rules.
  • Living apart from society- two new religious
orders were given to the monks who wanted to live
and tech among people. Most monks lived apart
    from society.

5
Friars
  • Francis of Assisi- he was a Franciscan or a monk
that wanted to live amongst the society.
  • Friars- the members of the two orders were called
    friars.
  • Living with society- had two new religious orders
unlike others that didnt live amongst the
    society.

6
Universities are Built
  • Thomas Aquinas
  • College ?

7
Thomas Aquinas
  • He was a dominican friar who wrote a reasoned
argument about the existence of God.
  • He developed natural law which is a philosiphical
    system.

8
Universities
  • The first ones were built by the church. They
were about teaching religion, law, medicine, and
    philosophy.
  • The reason for this is because the scholars
wanted to establish a connection between
    religious faith and intellectual reason.
  • Back then they also took tests like we do now

9
The Church and The Arts
10
Religious Architecture
  • The Gothic cathedrals are among the most
beautiful of all architectural achievements in
    late medieval Europe.
  • The way this building was designed made people
    come closer to God.
  • Everything in this building was a work of art.

11
Summary
  • During the medieval times in Europe everything
revolved around Christianity. This is because the
local churches were what shaped the area and also
some on politics. But since it had an impact on
politics as well monks ended up having another
system called religious order. All of this led to
the creation of natural law and universities
being built to see if religious faith and
intellectual reason had some sort of connection.

12
Magna Carta Causes Changes in England
13
Magna Carta
  • This document listed rights that the king could
    not ignore.
  • In 1215 a group of nobles decided to force the
    king to respect their rights.

14
Effects of Magna Carta
  • It made it to where no one can be kept in jail
without reason, the king had to obey the law, and
the person had to have a jury trial.
  • This being created was an important step towards
    democracy.

15
Changes After the Magna Carta
  • It inspired the nobles to make a group called
    Parliament.
  • Parliament is the law making body that governs
    England today.
  • He was the one that elected the judges and people
thought that because of this they would side with
    him.

16
Own Magna Carta
  • The teacher shall not write a student up and not
    tell them why.
  • The teacher will not disrespect our property.
  • The teacher shall not be unfair/disrespectful
    inside or outside of school.

What happened to it
  • People got healthy and found out that it was
spread from fleas on rats. Because of this
discovery they cleaned up the streets due to the
fact that they had more strength, more money, and
more food. This got rid of the rats and Europe
finally got out of the dark ages because of the
