Asian Tsunami Disaster
  • December 26th 2004

2
Overview
  • The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake was a magnitude
    9.0 undersea earthquake on December 26, 2004
which generated tsunamis that caused one of the
deadliest natural disasters in modern history.

3
Overview
  • This rare type of earthquake known as a
megathrust earthquake struck at 005853 UTC
(075853 local time) in the Indian Ocean off the
western coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. It
was the largest earthquake on Earth since the
9.2-magnitude Good Friday Earthquake of 1964, and
tied for fourth largest since 1900.

5
Power of the Earthquake
  • Power of the earthquake
  • The total energy released by a magnitude 9.0
earthquake is equivalent to 32,000 megatons of
    TNT.
  • This exceeds the total amount of energy consumed
in the United States in one year by 30, or the
energy released by the wind of a hurricane like
Hurricane Isabel over a period of 70 days.

6
Water
  • Equivalently, this amount of energy is enough to
boil 2,600 gallons of water for every person on
    Earth.

7
Aftershocks
8
Death Toll
  • Indonesia At least 80,246 people were killed on
    Sumatra island
  • Sri Lanka Some 28,729 killed. About 1 million
    people were displaced.
  • India The government said 9,067 deaths have been
confirmed but nearly 4,000 more were missing.,
  • Thailand The government said 4,985 people died,
    including 2,230 foreigners.

9

10
Bodies left Behind
  • Bodies of the victims of the tidal wave float in
a river in the center of Banda Aceh, Indonesia,
    Sunday Jan. 2, 2005.

11
Rescue?
  • American Navy Sea Hawk helicopter unloads relief
goods to refugees in Kewde Teunom, Aceh province
in northwestern Indonesia Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005.

12
What is left.
  • A Thai man walks among the debris left behind by
    a tsunami in Phang Nga.

13
The Burials Continue
  • Thai health workers fill the trench with hundreds
bodies of tsunami victims at a mass burial site
    in Takuapa.

14
Containing Disease
  • Thai forensic team wearing protective suit walks
between bodies laid out in the open ground of the
    Buddhist temple in Phang.

15
What may be ahead.
  • Public-health officials are racing to confront
the threat of water-borne disease, which could
prove to be as deadly as the floodwaters
    themselves.
  • "Perhaps as many as 5 million people are not able
to access what they need. Either they cannot get
water, or their sanitation is inadequate, or they
    cannot get food."
