Correct an error on lect. 11, slide 11, 10-3 It
states that Matthew was the son of Levi. Matthew
was the son of Alphaeus. His other name was Levi
3
Questions On Last Lecture
On what did Jesus send his disciples in Matthew
10? Why is it call by this name? What was the
objective of the first phase of Matthews
gospel? The second phase? What might be referred
to as Jesus midterm exam? Where is the real
problem with rejecting the word of Jesus? What is
the basic lesson centered around Johns asking if
Jesus was the one he had proclaimed him to be?

4
What is the sin against the Holy spirit, and why
cant it be forgiven? What does what he hath
will be taken away from him mean? What is a
parable? Where and why did Jesus change his
teaching method to parables. Be able to identify,
give the meaning, and discuss the 7 parables in
Matt. 13.

LECTURE SIXTEEN
6
  • Teaching Tools of Jesus

7
Retention Tools
  • 1. The parable, to lay a story beside another.
An earthly story with a heavenly meaning,.
  • 2. The epigram, or catchy phrase
  • Whosoever will save his life shall lose it
  • For every one that exalteth himself shall be
    abased
  • What is a man profited, if he shall gain the
whole world and lose his soul.
  • 3. The paradox, or seemingly contradiction
  • The meek shall inherit the earth.
  • If the light that is in you be darkness, how
    great is that darkness.

8
Retention Tools
  • The hyperbole. A greatly overstated statement
    for emphases
  • John 21 25. And there are also many other
things which Jesus did, the which, if they should
be written every one, I suppose that even the
world itself could not contain the books that
    should be written. Amen.
  • Mark 943. And if thy hand offend thee, cut it
off it is better for thee to enter into life
maimed, than having two hands to go into hell,
into the fire that never shall be quenched

9
Matthew 14
  • 1. At that timegrowing season of hostility
  • Herod the tetrarch Antipas heard of the fame
    of Jesus,
  • 2. And said unto his servants, This is John the
Baptist he is risen from the dead and therefore
mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.
  • 3. For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound
him, and put him in prison for Herodias' sake,
    his brother Philip's wife.
  • 4. For John said unto him, It is not lawful for
    thee to have her.
  • 5. And when he would have put him to death, he
feared the multitude, because they counted him as
    a prophet.

10
Matthew 141 (John is Beheaded)
  • At that time Season of growing hostility
  • When Jesus was increasingly challenging their
    traditions.
  • When their faith was still weak (Matt. 1358)
  • HEROD the TETRARCH (Antipas)
  • Despot king
  • Edomite, that ruled over the Jews
  • Given to excesses, then troubled in Conscience,
    but not enough to repent
  • Had heard John gladly
  • In shameful hour, ordered Johns death against
    his wishes
  • Thought Jesus was a reincarnation of John the
    Baptist
  • Lk. 1619 (If not hear him in life, would not now)

11
John the Baptist Imprisoned by Herod
  • In Machaeus, near Dead Sea
  • Because of Herodias, Philips wife.
  • Named after Herod the Great
  • Married to her Uncle Philip (Mothers brother)
  • Who lived in Rome. Herod visited them and eloped
    with Herodias.
  • Herod Antipas, was her half uncle.
  • Herodias didnt like Johns sermons..It is not
lawful for you to have your brothers wife.
  • MARK 619 Herodias had a quarrel nursed a
    grudge against John

12
Opportunity for Herodias to Get Even With John
the Baptist
  • Herods Birthday party.- Salome danced
  • Herod made foolish oaths to give her anything she
wanted.her mother prompted here to ask for
    Johns head on a platter.
  • Herod was grieved, but did it anyway because of
    his guests.

13
Jesus Withdrew from Herod.
  • JESUS WITHDREW
  • No more contact until trial, then Jesus would
not answer him a word. What a sad commentary)
  • Why did Jesus Withdraw?
  • Because of Herods attitude toward truth
  • Go tell that Fox Today, tomorrow, and third
day I will be perfected..Jesus had no fear.
Jesus left Herod to His Devilishness
  • Herod had not rejected Jesus so much as Jesus had
rejected Herod. For instance Jerusalem Mt. 23
How oft would I have gathered thee
  • Jesus could speak to a dying thief, but not Herod.

14
Feeding the 5,000
  • Mt14 15. And when it was evening, his disciples
came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and
the time is now past send the multitude away,
that they may go into the villages, and buy
themselves victuals. 16. But Jesus said unto
them, They need not depart give ye them to eat.
    17. And they say unto him, We have here but five
loaves, and two fishes. 18. He said, Bring them
    hither to me.

15
  • 19. And he commanded the multitude to sit down
on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the
two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed,
and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples,
and the disciples to the multitude. 20. And they
did all eat, and were filled and they took up of
the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.
    21. And they that had eaten were about five
thousand men, beside women and children.

16
Mt. 14 Feeding the 5,000.
  • Broad lesson Mans inefficiency is supplied by
    Jesus sufficiency.
  • Specific purpose and lessons
  • (1) 65 To prove and increase the disciples
faith. Whence shall we buy bread that these may
    eat?
  • (2) Jesus will, with but a small beginning, feed
the multitudes of the world with an over-flowing
    of bread.
  • (3) Gods power is never overtaxed.
  • John 615 Error based on predisposition. They
wanted to make him the king they had in mind.
    Jesus fled.

17
The Storm at Sea
1422. And straightway Jesus constrained his
disciples to get into a ship, and to go before
him unto the other side, while he sent the
multitudes away.23. And when he had sent the
multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart
to pray and when the evening was come, he was
there alone.24. But the ship was now in the
midst of the sea, tossed with waves for the wind
was contrary.25. And in the fourth watch of the
night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.
26. And when the disciples saw him walking on
the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a
spirit and they cried out for fear. 7. But
straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of
good cheer it is I be not afraid. 28. And
Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou,
bid me come unto thee on the water.
18
29. And he said, Come. And when Peter was come
down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to
go to Jesus. 30. But when he saw the wind
boisterous, he was afraid and beginning to sink,
he cried, saying, Lord, save me. 31. And
immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and
caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little
faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? 32. And when
they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.
33. Then they that were in the ship came and
worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the
Son of God.
19
Peters Adventure in Faith in the midst of the
Storm
  • If it is you, bid me come.
  • Peter walked on water for a short distance
  • He began to sink
  • His prayer and petition.. Lord save me
  • Immediately Jesus responded
  • The wind ceased
  • They worshipped him.

20

21
MATTHEW 15Tensions increase as the Jews seek
occasion against Jesus.
  • 151. Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees,
(the intelligentsia of the Judaism with backing
from the Sanhedrin) which were of Jerusalem,
saying, 2. Why do thy disciples transgress the
tradition of the elders? (the Mishna and Talmud)
for they wash not their hands when they eat
    bread.
  • Seems innocent enough but inwardly they are
ravening wolves seeking any entrapment to dispose
    of Jesus.
  • THIS IS NOT A QUESTION OF CLEANLINESS BUT
    CEREMONY!

22
Jesus Answers His Entrappers
  • 153. But he answered and said unto them, Why do
ye also transgress the commandment of God by your
tradition? (JESUS DID NOT DENY TRANSGRESSING THE
TALMUD AND THE MISHNA BUT HE ACCUSES THEM OF
    TRANSGRESSING THE LAW.,
  • I TRANSGRESS YOUR TRADITIONS BUT YOU TRANSGRESS
    THE LAW OF GOD.

23
  • 154. For God commanded, saying, Honour thy
father and mother and, He that curseth father or
mother, let him die the death. (Ex. 2012 2117)
    5. But ye say, (TRADITION) Whosoever shall say
to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by
whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me 6.
And honour not his father or his mother, he shall
be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God
of none effect by your tradition.

24
Jesus Beware of Religion Based on Mere Human
Tradition
  • Mt 157. Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy
of you, saying, 8. This people draweth nigh
unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with
their lips but their heart is far from me.
  • True religion that leads to eternal life is more
than a lot of sweet talk about God

25
Jesus Defines Vain Worship
  • Mt. 159. But in vain they do worship me,
teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
  • Rom. 102. For I bear them record that they have
a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge
  • Every religion designed by man is vain (empty,
worthless) it is not based upon the word of God.
  • I Peter 411. If any man speak, let him speak as
    the oracles of God
  • Gal. 18-9. But though we, or an angel from
heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than
that which we have preached unto you, let him be
    accursed.
  • Rev. 2219. And if any man shall take away from
the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall
take away his part out of the book of life, and
out of the holy city, and from the things which
    are written in this book.

26
Watch your words What you say can keep you out
of heaven
  • Mt. 1510, 11 And he called the multitude, and
said unto them, Hear, and understand Not that
which goeth into the mouth defileth a man
(eating without going through the ceremony of
unwashed hands) but that which cometh out of the
    mouth, this defileth a man.
  • Mt. 1236, 37. But I say unto you, That every
idle word that men shall speak, they shall give
account thereof in the day of judgment. For by
thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy
    words thou shalt be condemned.

27
Preaching Jesus will alienate hypocritical
religious people
  • 12. Then came his disciples, and said unto him,
Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended,
    after they heard this saying?
  • 13. But he answered and said, Every plant,
which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall
    be rooted up.
  • 14. Let them alone they be blind leaders of
the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both
    shall fall into the ditch.

28
Summary of Jesus Sermon
  • Mt. 1519. For out of the heart proceed evil
    thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications,
thefts, false witness, blasphemies 20. These
are the things which defile a man but to eat
with unwashen hands defileth not a man.
  • Traditions are still placed above Jesus word and
continue to divide religious people into little
    groups
  • I Cor. 10. Now I beseech you, brethren, by the
name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak
the same thing, and that there be no divisions
among you but that ye be perfectly joined
together in the same mind and in the same
    judgment.

30
.
  • Mt 1521. Then Jesus went thence, and departed
into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon. 22. And,
behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same
coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on
me, O Lord, thou Son of David my daughter is
grievously vexed with a devil. 23. But he
answered her not a word. And his disciples came
and besought him, saying, Send her away for she
crieth after us.24. But he answered and said, I
am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house
    of Israel.

31
  • 25. Then came she and worshipped him, saying,
Lord, help me. 26. But he answered and said, It
is not meet to take the children's bread, and to
cast it to dogs. (kunaria little pet dogs, as
opposed to wild street dogs, cp. Rev. 2215
    without are dogs kunez)
  • 27. And she said, Truth, Lord yet the dogs eat
of the crumbs which fall from their masters'
table. 28. Then Jesus answered and said unto
her, O woman, great is thy faith be it unto thee
even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made
    whole from that very hour.

32
MATT. 16 Once again the officials seek to
ensnare Jesus
  • 16 1. The Pharisees also with the Sadducees
came, and tempting desired him that he would shew
them a sign from heaven. 2. He answered and said
unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be
fair weather for the sky is red.
  • 3. And in the morning, It will be foul weather
to day for the sky is red and lowering. O ye
hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky
but can ye not discern the signs of the times?

33
  • 164. A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh
after a sign and there shall no sign be given
unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And
    he left them, and departed.
  • (Mt 76 dont give whats holy to the dogs.)

34
The sign of the Prophet Jonas
  • Return to Mt. 1239. But he answered and said
unto them, An evil and adulterous generation
seeketh after a sign and there shall no sign be
given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas
  • 1. THE SIGN OF THE DEATH BURIAL AND RESURRECTION
  • 40. For as Jonas was three days and three
nights in the whale's belly so shall the Son of
man be three days and three nights in the heart
    of the earth.
  • 2. THE SIGN THAT GENTILES WILL REPENT AT THE
    PREACHING OF JESUS
  • 41. The men of Nineveh (Gentiles) shall rise in
judgment with this generation, and shall condemn
it because they repented at the preaching of
Jonas and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.

35
Another Gentile will rise in judgment to the
Scribes and Pharisees
  • 42. The queen of the south shall rise up in the
judgment with this generation, and shall condemn
it for she came from the uttermost parts of the
earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon and, behold,
a greater than Solomon is here. I Kgs. 107 the
    half was not told me

36
Beware of Poisonous Bread Which is False Teaching
  • Mt. 168 Which when Jesus perceived, he said
unto them, O ye of little faith, why reason ye
among yourselves, because ye have brought no
    bread?
  • 9. Do ye not yet understand, neither remember
the five loaves of the five thousand, and how
many baskets ye took up? 10. Neither the seven
loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets
ye took up? 11. How is it that ye do not
understand that I spake it not to you concerning
bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the
Pharisees and of the Sadducees? 12. Then
understood they how that he bade them not beware
of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of
the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.MK 424

37
Two Great Divisions in Jesus Ministry
  • PART ONE In this study we will see the close of
the 1st phase of Jesus ministry leading them to
discover the right answer to this question Who
    Am I, in 1615
  • Mat. 1620 we have a verse of separation Tell
    no man until
  • PART TWO Then there is the introduction of the
2nd phase of of His ministry In 1621, The
    Messiah must suffer.
  • 21. From that time forth began Jesus to shew
unto his disciples, how that he must go unto
Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders
and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and
be raised again the third day.

38
Phase One of Jesus Personal Ministry Closes with
a Test
Mt. 1613. When Jesus came into the coasts of
Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples,
saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?
14. And they said, Some say that thou art John
the Baptist some, Elias and others, Jeremias,
or one of the prophets. 15. He saith unto them,
But whom say ye that I am? 16. And Simon Peter
answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son
of the living God.17. And Jesus answered and
said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona
for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto
thee, but my Father which is in heaven.18. And I
say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon
this rock I will build my church and the gates
of hell shall not prevail against it.19. And I
will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of
heaven and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth
shall be bound in heaven and whatsoever thou
shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
20. Then charged he his disciples that they
should tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ.
39
Why close the First Phase Like this?
  • Have the disciples a better understanding of him
    that the general public?
  • What do the disciples think about him? How far
have they come under his teaching? Do they
    really know who he is?
  • THE GREAT DISCOVERY
  • And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the
Christ, the Son of the living God. 17. And
Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art
thou, Simon Barjona for flesh and blood hath not
revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in
    heaven.

40
  • Jesus Revealed the way he had learned this.
  • From my Father which is in heaven
  • Matt. 1618 is used to promote The Petrine Theory
  • Petros is masculine meaning small rock
  • Petra is feminine meaning large boulder

41
THE FOUNDATION STONE WAS JESUS, PETER WAS ONLY A
BUILDING BLOCK
  • ISA. 28 4. Wherefore hear the word of the Lord,
ye scornful men, that rule this people which is
in Jerusalem. 15. Because ye have said, We have
made a covenant with death, and with hell are we
at agreement when the overflowing scourge shall
pass through, it shall not come unto us for we
have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood
    have we hid ourselves

42
700 YEARS LATER IT HAPPENED
  • 1. Covenant with death--- Mt. 2614. Then one
of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto
    the chief priests,
  • 15. And said unto them, What will ye give me,
and I will deliver him unto you? And they
covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver.

43
2. With hell are we at agreement ---Mt. 2763
  • Matt. 27 63. Saying, Sir, we remember that that
deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After
three days I will rise again.
  • 64. Command therefore that the sepulchre be
made sure until the third day, lest his disciples
come by night, and steal him away, and say unto
the people, He is risen from the dead so the
last error shall be worse than the first.
  • 65. Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch go
your way, make it as sure as ye can.
  • 66. So they went, and made the sepulchre sure,
sealing the stone, and setting a watch.

44
3. We Have made Lies our Refuge.
  • 11. Now when they were going, behold, some of
the watch came into the city, and shewed unto the
chief priests all the things that were done.
  • 12. And when they were assembled with the
elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large
    money unto the soldiers,
  • 13. Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by
night, and stole him away while we slept.
  • 14. And if this come to the governor's ears, we
will persuade him, and secure you.
  • 15. So they took the money, and did as they
were taught and this saying is commonly reported
among the Jews until this day.

45
Regardless of all they would do, the Lord Will
Build His House
  • 2816. Therefore thus saith the Lord God,
Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a
tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure
foundation he that believeth shall not make
haste. 17. Judgment also will I lay to the line,
    and righteousness to the plummet

46
The Lord Will Build His House
  • The stone would be laid in Zion (Jerusalem)
  • It would be a tried stone, a sure foundation
  • The believer will not be ashamed
  • Judgment will be laid to the line and
    Righteousness to the plummet

47
Isa. 28
  • 17 and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of
lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding
place. 18. And your covenant with death shall
be disannulled, and your agreement with hell
shall not stand when the overflowing scourge
shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down
    by it.

48
Obviously this is the death, burial and
resurrection of Jesus.
  • All this had to happened before the new house of
God, the church of Christ, could be built. Dan
    245. Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone
was cut out of the mountain without handsJesus
said he was going to build his church and the
gates of hell would not prevail against
it.After the church was est. in Acts 2, Peter
said the stone had been laid. (Acts 412)
  • The Big Corner stone is Jesus
  • The small building stones are those, as Peter,
who confess Jesus as the Son of God.

49
Matthew 1618
  • Jesus said he was going to build his church and
the gates of hell would not prevail against it.
  • After the stone was tried, His church was est. in
Acts 2, then in Acts 412 Peter said the stone
    had been laid.

50
Peter on Christ as the Foundation Stone
  • 11. This is the stone which was set at nought
of you builders, which is become the head of the
    corner.
  • 12. Neither is there salvation in any other
for there is none other name under heaven given
among men, whereby we must be saved.
  • CHRIST IS THE STONE ON WHICH THE CHURCH IS BUILT,
NOT PETER. Men have formulated the Petrine
theory, that Peter was the rock to give credence
that he was the first Pope.

51
NOW NOTE THESE SCRIPTURES
  • Eph. 219. Now therefore ye are no more
strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with
the saints, and of the household of God
  • 20. And are built upon the foundation of the
apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being
    the chief corner stone
  • 21. In whom all the building fitly framed
together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord
  • 22. In whom ye also are builded together for an
habitation of God through the Spirit.
