Objectives
  • Reasons for implementation of online workshop
  • Process used for design development
  • Feedback from faculty
  • Demonstration of Blackboard course
  • Demonstration of tools used
  • Future goals

7
Reasons for Implementation
  • 2004 spring semester statistics showed that out
of 684 faculty using Blackboard only 324 attended
    Blackboard orientation workshop.
  • 72 of our faculty are part-time faculty.
  • Most part-time faculty do not have time to attend
    workshops during regular office hours.
  • Learning how to use Blackboard is time consuming
and some faculty find it very difficult to use.
  • Reduce the number of e-mails and phone calls.

8
Reasons for Implementation
  • We needed an alternative to classroom-led
    workshops
  • Part-time faculty need access to information when
it is more convenient to them.
  • E-learning can be used to promote collaboration
    and create a community
  • Content is consistent with information provided
    in face-to-face workshops

9
Process Used for Design Development
  • Project plan using Instructional System Design
    (ISD) process
  • Initial needs assessment survey
  • Only 47 of the faculty received training
  • Most faculty tried to learn how to use Blackboard
    on their own
  • Task analysis and course outline
  • Course Information
  • Policies and guidelines
  • Using Blackboard
  • Preparing a Blackboard course Web site

10
Process Used for Design Development
  • Flowchart for content organization
  • Define objectives and expectations
  • Create online activities using communication
    tools
  • E-mail
  • Discussion Board
  • Virtual Classroom

11
Process Used for Design Development
  • Write storyboards and create content
  • HTML
  • PDF
  • Movies
  • Simulations
  • Field testing/small group tryout

12
Feedback from Faculty
  • Faculty like the ability to access content at
    anytime and anywhere
  • Access and ease of use was not a problem
  • Duration of workshop was too long
  • Use of collaboration tools should not be required

13
Drawbacks of e-Learning
  • Blackboard system was upgraded after online
    workshop was implemented
  • Multimedia files needed to be updated
  • Faculty need to have the motivation and
    self-discipline
  • Faculty with disabilities may need special support

14
Demonstration
  • Blackboard orientation for new faculty
    (Blackboard 5.5)
  • Blackboard orientation for new faculty
    (Blackboard 6.1)

15
Demonstration of Tools Used
  • Dreamweaver MX 2004
  • Camtasia Studio 2.0
  • Flash MX 2004 Professional

16
Future Goals
  • Prepare additional online workshops for popular
    Blackboard features
  • Effective tracking and evaluation plan
  • Create a process for our department
  • Study implementation of new technologies to
    deliver content (SCORM)
