1
Solar System The Earth and the Planets By
Amber OStrander

2
At the end of the presentation you should be able
to
  • Be able to tell me the nine planets in our solar
    system
  • Know the order of the planets fall by how far
away they are from the sun.
  • Tell me important facts that would characterize
    (describe) each of the planets.
  • Know the vocabulary.
  • which can also be found in your textbook.
  • Complete the project.

3
Size of the planets..from Largest to Smallest in
MILES
  • Uranus diameter 31,763
  • Neptune diameter 30,775
  • Earth diameter 7,926
  • Mars Diameter- 4,217
  • Mercury diameter 3,031
  • Pluto diameter 1,430
  • Jupiter Diameter- 88,730
  • Saturn Diameter 74,900
  • Venus Diameter 7,521

4
What makes up the Solar System?
  • Planets
  • Stars
  • Comets- A big ball of dirty ice and snow in
    outer space.
  • Asteroids- A rocky space object that can be a
few feet wide to several hundred miles wide.

5
How the solar system works?
  • All the planets, and moons are held together by a
    force called gravity
  • Gravity is the force that keeps objects together.
  • All the planets circle or orbit around a star.
This star is called the sun.
  • The planets move in two ways.
  • Rotate- Planets rotate around their axis.
Just like a basketball will rotate around your
    finger.
  • Axis- Imaginary straight line that the
    objects move around.
  • Orbit- All the planets move around the sun
  • Orbit
    Rotate

6
How the solar system was formed
  • Scientist believe that the solar system was
formed 10 to 12 billion years ago!! .
  • Swirling gas and dust formed a thick core. This
core become a mass which collapsed.
  • This collapse made what is now known as the sun!
  • The remaining matter swirled into a disk.
  • Some of the matter crashed together to form other
masses which are known as the planets.

7
Solar System
  • This is a virtual tour that shows where our Earth
and our solar system relates to the rest of the
    universe!
  • What you should know before the tour
  • Universe-The huge space which contains all of
the matter (stuff that things are made out of)
    and energy in existence.
  • Galaxy- a giant collection of gas, dust,
and billions or millions of stars.
  • The Tour

Order of the Planets
  • Mercury
  • Venus
  • Earth
  • Mars
  • Jupiter
  • Saturn
  • Uranus
  • Neptune
  • Plato
  • My
  • Very
  • Energetic
  • Mother
  • Just

  • Pickles

9
Mercury
  • Mercury is the smallest planet in the solar
    system
  • Mercury is the closest planet to the sun.
  • This planet has NO moons!
  • It takes Mercury 88 days to orbit around the sun.
Their year consists of 88 days!!
  • It is the fastest traveling planet in the solar
    system
  • Mercury has thin atmosphere and because of this
it has lots of holes made by comets and
    asteroids.
  • The surface on this planet is ROCKY!

10
Venus
  • Venus is the closest planet to Earth and it does
not have any life forms like Earth does.
  • This is probably because Venus gets really hot,
because the clouds captures the heat.
  • It gets so HOT that it can melt a cannon ball.
  • Venus has thick spinning clouds and constant
    thunderstorms. Another interesting thing about
Venus is that it has volcanoes.
  • Because of the hot heat of the planet, the
    surface is really DRY!
  • Venus is one of the brightest planets because the
    heavy clouds reflect sunlight.

11
Interesting fact about Venus
  • Because Venus is one of the most brightest things
out in space, it has been the source for most UFO
    sightings!

12
Is there Life on Other Planets?
  • Earth is the ONLY KNOWN planet to have water.
Scientist are searching for water on other parts
of the universe. Water is the key ingredient for
    having life on a planet.
  • Earths environment allows for life on the
    planet.
  • - There has been no other planets found
    that can support life.

13
Earth
  • EARTH
  • It takes 24 hours to rotate around Earths axis
  • The Earth moves around its axis so fast that we
are traveling at 18 miles per second, even though
    we are standing still.
  • At first the Earth was really hot and the surface
was filled with rocks, but temperatures began to
fall and water started to form!
  • Earth can support life because
  • 70 of the Earth is made up of water.
  • The distance to the sun allows for a steady and
    constant temperature.
  • The atmosphere is made up of different gases that
    allow us to breathe

14
First Man to Walk on Earths Moon
  • Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the
    moon!
  • He was the commander of Apollo 11.
  • This event happened on July 20th 1969.
  • One small step for man one giant
  • leap for mankind.

15
Mars
  • A Mars day is 24 hours and 37 min.
  • This planet is a red color because of iron dust
  • Surface is
  • Rock
  • Metal
  • Mountains
  • Craters
  • Mars may have water that froze in ice caps.

16
Jupiter
  • The largest planet in the solar system.
  • - 88,730 miles in diameter
  • - this planet is so big it can hold together
  • all of the planets combined!
  • Scientists have found red spots on Jupiter, these
spots are just like hurricanes (Strong winds).
These hurricanes are the size of Earth!!
  • Jupiter has small rings around its planet.
  • There are 16 moons that circle around Jupiter.

17
Jupiter is made up of.
  • Gas
  • Rock core

18
What are the rings around the planet?
  • These rings are made up of dust, particles of
planets that were never connected when the
    planets formed.
  • Saturns rings are made up of dust and ICE. The
ice can be as small as pebbles or as big as
    houses.
  • At a great distance the sun makes the rings look
like a solid, glowing band around the planets.

19
Saturn
  • Known for its rings!
  • Saturn moves so fast that it flattens out the
tops and the bottoms of the planets, like a
    deflated basketball.
  • Surface is rocky and gassy.
  • This planet has 18 moons!
  • Saturn is lighter then water. So if Saturn fit in
    a bathtub it would float

20
Uranus
  • Uranus is 41 times Earths size!
  • Uranus rotates on its side!
  • One Uranus year is equal to 84 Earth years.
  • - It takes 84 earth years to orbit around the
    sun
  • Surface of Uranus is
  • rapid winds
  • cloudy surface
  • small rocky core
  • You can recognize Uranus by its deep blue color

21
Neptune
  • One Neptune day is equal to 19hrs and 12mins.
  • One Neptune year is equal to 165 Earth years.
  • Weather
  • Rapidly swirling winds
  • Strong storms
  • Neptune has rings but the
  • rings are hard to see because
  • they are so small.

22
Pluto
  • Pluto is the smallest planet of our solar system.
It is even smaller then our moon!!
  • It takes 6 Earth days to make one Pluto day! So
it takes 6 Earth days to rotate around its axis.
  • One Pluto year is equal to 248 Earth years.
  • Pluto is the only planet that has not been
    traveled to by spacecraft.
  • Pluto and Neptune cross paths when they orbit
    around the sun.
  • - They will never crash because billions of
    miles apart.
  • This planet has the iciest surface because it is
    furthest from the sun

23
The End or Is it.?
  • Your project is to work with 4 other member of
your class and put together a fo (fake) solar
system consisting of the nine planets and the
    sun.
  • You can use any materials that you can think of
that would represent (show) each planet and the
    sun!
  • Be sure to think about
  • The size of the planets and how you can represent
    that
  • Are there any objects that could represent the
    planets or sun.
  • Example- For Saturn you could use a small
balloon and draw rings around the center to
represent the lightness and its many rings.
  • BE CREATIVE!!!!
