Pratt Whitney Connecticut Operations Tooling
Definitions
  • Durable Tooling A type of tool that is designed
to last (or can be refurbished to last) for the
duration of the product life cycle. Such devices
are used (but not limited) to holding,
positioning, forming or casting a part. Durable
Tooling is not consumed in the manufacturing
process nor does it become part of the end
product. Durable tooling may be used in the
development of an engine and have subsequent use
    in production.
  • Special Tooling A subset of Durable Tooling
which are durable tools charged to a military
product line code. Reference PW-SLP 4.7
  • Shop Supplies Items that are used in support of
manufacturing processes and are readily found in
    a manufacturing environment.
  • Perishable Tooling Tools, which by the nature of
their design are directly consumed in the
manufacturing process items which through normal
wear during use cannot perform the original
function for which they were obtained. In many
instances these tools can be re-sharpened or
repaired without losing their original identity
    thereby extending their useful life.
  • Capital Equipment (gross fixed assets)
