4What is MS?
- Model A physical, mathematical, or otherwise
logical representation of a system, entity,
phenomenon, or process (DoD Directive 5000.59,
1994, P 114) - A model is a simplified substitute for a more
elaborate or complex item - Static feeds simulations
- Simulation A method for implementing a model
over a period of time (DoD Directive 5000.59,
1994, P132, E2.1.16) - Dynamic - simulations incorporate models to
represent change over time - Actively shows what has, is or may happen
5Types of Simulations Live, Virtual and
Constructive (LVC)
Live involving real people operating real
systems.
Virtual involving real people operating
simulated systems.
Constructive . involve simulated people
operating simulated systems (machine-to-machine).
Real people stimulate (make inputs) to such
simulations, but are not involved in determining
the outcomes.

making
8General Foglemans Vision 1995
allow us to demonstrate the flexibility,
responsiveness and utility of air power in peace
and war.
get senior leadership understanding and
involvement in the development of an accelerated
Air Force MS Program.
Develop a capability using interoperable MS
systems to provide warfighters and
decision-makers the tools to ensure readiness
across the full spectrum of conflict.
Gen Foglemans task is still relevant!
9Why AFAMS?
- Air Force 4-Star Summit created AFAMS
- Personally sponsored by CSAF and SECAF
- Why AFAMS?
- USAF can not effectively implement critical
simulation-enhanced air and space capabilities
without an implementer/integrator and office of
primary responsibility

11Air Forces Visions for MS
Air Force Vision The United States Air Force will
be a trusted and reliable joint partner with our
sister services known for integrity in all of our
activities, including supporting the joint
mission first and foremost. We will provide
compelling air, space, and cyber capabilities for
use by the Combatant Commanders. We will excel as
stewards of all Air Force resources in service to
the American people, while providing precise and
reliable Global Vigilance, Reach and Power for
the Nation.
AF MS Vision Modeling and simulation
capabilities enabling the United States Air Force
to organize, train, educate, equip, and employ
current and future air, space, and cyberspace
forces for the full range of operations.
12AFAMS Mission Statement
- Maximizing warfighter performance and decision
making for all operations through seamless
integration of live, virtual and constructive
environments.
The mission of the United States Air Force is to
fly, fight and win...in air, space and cyberspace.
13AF and AFAMS Priorities
AFAMS Priority Maximizing the performance and
decision making for the warfighter on the tip of
the spear for the current war and the most
probable future war through seamless integration
of live, virtual and constructive environments so
that they can deter or win the fight.
- AF Priorities
- Continue to Reinvigorate the Nuclear Enterprise
- Partner with Joint and Coalition Team to Win
Todays Fight - Develop and Care for Airmen and their Families
- Modernize our Air and Space Inventories,
Organizations Training - Recapture Acquisition Excellence
