2
Defining the Need
  • Auburn currently shelters its homeless animals by
contract with the King County Animal
    Shelter(KCAC).
  • In 2010, budget shortfalls forced KCAC to
substantially raise the contract cost and reduce
    services to Auburn.
  • King County faces an aging facility, questionable
animal care conditions, and reform resistant
    leadership. http//www.kcaccexposed.org
  • Auburn has lost personalized animal control
services, control of the financial future and
care level for our pets. If not addressed, we
could face the loss of this non-mandated service
    for our animals and community.

3
Local Veterinarians Respond
  • The decision was made to
  • FORM a Humane Society to address the needs of our
local animal population and shelter management
    for the next decade.
  • PARTNER with the city to provide licensing
services, a shelter facility, and animal control
    officer.
  • LEAD the volunteer effort with corporate and
private support of their time, talent, and
    treasure.
  • REALIZE the ownership of a program that maintains
the quality of life expected by a healthy
    community.

4
Milestones
  • The Auburn Valley Humane Society was formed in
March 2011 and has achieved 501c3 status.
  • Seventeen members of our community lead this
project including all Auburn veterinary clinics.
  • A facility at 4910 A Street SE has been located
    and a remodeling plan secured.
  • Operational budgets have been established and
endorsed by a partnering local humane society.
  • The city of Auburn has offered a contract outline
    for a financial partnership.

5
Plan benefits
  • Animal Control services for Auburn city limits.
  • Animal license fees of over 250,000 stay in
    Auburn to fund our shelter.
  • Youth to elderly in our community realize direct
involvement and management of our need.
  • Professional oversight in the care and future of
    our pets.
  • Control over our financial and sheltering future
    for animal control services.

6
Will the community respond?
  • The Auburn Valley Humane Society needs to
furnish the building provided by the City of
Auburn, see an increase of animal licensing by
10 to meet the agreed budget, and secure a list
of volunteers to help with the day to day
    operation of the animal shelter.
