the magazine article you need. To request a
periodical in our library, you need the name of
the magazine, volume, issue, date, page number(s)
    AND who you are!
  • Please be patient as Mrs. Mathias and Mrs. Wempen
will do what we can to help you.
  • Return the magazine to us at the end of the hour.

20
We have the periodicals listed on the web page
  • American Heritage is an awesome reference tool
    for historical research!
  • We subscribe to about 30 periodicals each year
and we keep those periodicals in the back for
    your use.

21
Computer Research
  • There are various tools to use when you research
on the computer. Go to www.virdenschools.com and
go to the library links page.

22
Our Card catalog
  • Virden Middle School-High School Card Catalog has
    an extensive list of books.
  • Search Title

book from another library, we are a member of
    Lewis Clark Library System

and films. To request a book or film, print the
page you need, PUT YOUR FIRST LAST NAME on that
page and ask us to request the book.

Time Frame on Lewis Clark Books
  • If you request a book, we enter it into the
database and it will take 4 days or more to get
the book from the lending library.
  • We have about 2 weeks until the lending library
    needs it returned.
  • If the book is returned late, well receive a
hefty fine plus our borrowing will be limited

World Book Online (many teachers do not allow
students to use encyclopedias in their papers but
its a great place to find information!)
  • As an electronic encyclopedia World Book Online
not only helps you with historical information
    but also current topics
  • The information is maintained almost daily

27
Channel One
  • Channel One has excellent resource information
  • Again this is based on the key terms you use in
    searching

28
List of periodicals (magazines) in the library
  • We discussed the list of periodicals in the
    library.
  • From the middle column of the Library page youll
find the up-to-date list of periodicals.
  • You may borrow a magazine for the class period
and if you need it, you may have a copy made for
    you.

29
History Channel
  • Its great on TV but its even better for
    research! (Its excellent for history!)
  • This is again based on search terms so brainstorm
and think of various ways to discuss your topic.

30
Discovery Channel
  • The Discovery Channel website is excellent for
many topics including history and sciences.
  • Based on search terms, youll be as successful as
    the terminology you use.

31
Library of Congress
  • (An unbelievable quantity and quality of
information presented in an interesting display.)
  • The Library of congress is fascinating!
  • All information is extremely accurate and well
    illustrated.

32
Marco Polo
  • (designed to be an assistant for teachers, great
information contained here students may use as
    well).
  • The search area is different from most searchable
databases, but easy to use. If you can read, you
can search the site, but follow the instructions
carefully to narrow down your searches.

33
Scholastic
  • Scholastic would be a good place to browse if you
need a topic for a project.
  • Too many time we have no clue on topics for
projects so enter a potential search term and go!

34
Virden High School Library Page
  • Research Links provides an excellent list of
    interesting and informative sites
  • Some links to do not work now and were in the
    process of weeding them out.

35
APA style
  • at the bottom of the library page, APA
illustrates how to use APA style in writing
    papers.
  • Likewise, MLA at the bottom of the page shows you
how to use MLA style in writing papers.
  • Citation maker a tool that will show you how to
create citations for your reference page as well
as within your document HOWEVER, always check the
APA or MLA book pages to be sure the citation is
    created correctly!

36
 And when all else fails
  • Search Engines to use include
  • Google
  • Metacrawler
  • Ask (I feel Ask is weak)
  • Ask Jeeves (this became Ask and is still not
    strong)
  • Search by key terms and signs
  • Do NOT enter the whole question!

37
Reliable sources
  • Many teachers requires sources that have authors
listed in full--as in full complete names, first
and last, and that the sources be reputable
    sources.
  • And if you have questions, please ask!
