Contrast between Agape and Phileo
  • John 2115-17
  • v. 15- So when they had dined, Jesus saith to
Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest
(agape) thou me more than these? He saith unto
him, Yea, Lord thou knowest that I love (phileo)
thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.
  • v. 16 - He saith to him again the second time,
Simon, son of Jonas, lovest (agape) thou me? He
saith unto him, Yea, Lord thou knowest that I
love (phileo) thee. He saith unto him, Feed my
    sheep.
  • v. 17 - He saith unto him the third time,
Simon, son of Jonas, lovest (phileo) thou me?
Peter was grieved because he said unto him the
third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him,
Lord, thou knowest all things thou knowest that
I love (phileo) thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed
    my sheep.

Agape Verses in the New Testament
  • Agape
  • But I say unto you, Love (agape) your enemies,
bless them that curse you, do good to them that
hate you, and pray for them which despitefully
use you, and persecute you (Matt. 544)
  • And the second is like, namely this, Thou
shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is
none other commandment greater than these. (Mar
    1231)
  • Greater love hath no man than this, that a man
lay down his life for his friends. (John 1513)

Agape Love Chapter 1 Cor. 13
  • Agape
  • Though I speak with the tongues of men and of
angels, and have not charity, I am become as
sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though
I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all
mysteries, and all knowledge and though I have
all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and
have not charity (agape), I am nothing. (I Cor.
    131-2)
  • And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these
three but the greatest of these is charity
    (agape). (1 Cor. 1313)
