  • 1964 the State Oil and Chemical Industry
    Committee of the USSR started to consider the
    idea of an oil refinery in Lithuania
  • 1970 commissioning of the Polotsk Ventspils
    products pipeline crossing Lithuania
  • 1979 completion of the Polotsk Birzai
    Mazeikiai crude oil pipeline
  • 1980 commissioning of LK-6U Unit (atmospheric
    rectification, catalytic reforming, distillates

Privatization history
  • October 29, 1999 the Lithuanian Government,
    Mazeikiu Nafta, and Williams International signed
    an agreement, under which Williams International
    became a 33-percent owner and operator of
    Mazeikiu Nafta
  • July 18, 2002 the Lithuanian Government,
    Williams International, and YUKOS signed
    investment agreements, under which YUKOS acquired
    a 26.85-percent stake in Mazeikiu Nafta.
  • September 19, 2002 YUKOS acquired from Williams
    International an additional 26.85 percent stake
    assuming all rights and obligations of Williams
    International including operator rights in
    Mazeikiu Nafta
  • December 14-15, 2006 Successful finalization of
    transaction. PKN ORLEN acquired 84.36 per cent of
    Mazeikiu Nafta shares for 2.342bn

Recent important undertaking of Mazeikiu Nafta

    in its history in autumn 2007

  • More than 4,000 specialists of 80 contractor
    organizations from 15 countries arrived at the
    Refinery to perform
  • Maintenance and repairs of more than 600 major
    pieces of equipment 175 heat exchangers, 64
    towers, 16 reactors
  • Replacement of 460 pipelines.
  • Mažeikiu Nafta completed rebuild of the Vacuum
    Distillation Unit in December 2007 and
    recommissioned the unit on January 20, 2008

Modernization Program

Main goals of the Refinery Modernization
  • To increase the Refinerys annual capacity to 11
    MM tons of crude oil
  • To build the new process units and modernize and
    expand certain parts of the Refinery to achieve
    compliance of the products with the EU quality
    specifications and environmental requirements
  • To increase crude conversion ratio from 75 to
  • Total estimated cost of the Program is 1.6 bn.

  • Hydrocracker
  • Visbreaking Vacuum Flasher
  • Flue gas treatment and Power House Upgrade
  • Propylene splitter
  • Sulphur degassing and granulation
  • New hydrogen unit
  • Off-site facilities

Having implemented the Modernization Program, AB
Mazeikiu Nafta will become a stable part of ORLEN
Group, able to compete with the modern refineries
in the Region!
