  • Each chapter contains an introduction that places
the subject in historical and cultural context.
Subsections arranged by period, region and type
highlight key trends, styles and influences as
well as rules of principal designers, makers and
    when appropriate factories.

8
Scope (contd)
  • Every major category of antiques is discussed in
depth by a distinguished expert. More than 800
fully-captioned color photographs add a detailed
commentary on significant pieces. A glossary of
    terms supplements the text.

9
Scope (contd)
  • The balanced presentations of historical
perspective and thorough analysis of specific
examples presented here makes The Illustrated
History of Antiques the essential single volume
reference for the dedicated collector or the
    general reader.

10
Currency
  • Current in that every category of antiques is
discussed by a well know expert.

11
Intended Purpose
  • Dedicated collectors can use this for reference
as well as general readers educating themselves
in the history of antiques. The general public
might be interested in getting ideas about items
they feel might have antique value.

12
Intended Purpose/Additional Purposes (contd)
  • They would be able to evaluate and make decisions
as far as if they would want to bring their items
to an appraiser for an appraisal at a fee. If
you are not near an antique roadshow and have to
go to a professional appraiser on your own you
most likely would be charged a large fee.

13
Authority
  • A respected authority on antiques Huon Mallalieu
has published articles in many general and
    specialized publications including The Antiques
Trade Gazette, House Garden and Connoisseur.

14
Authority (contd)
  • He is general editor and coordinator of The
Popular Antiques Yearbook and was the Sales Room
writer for Country Life. Mr. Mallalieu was also
cataloguer of watercolors at Christies in
    London.

15
Personal Impression
  • I liked the book of course I watch and enjoy the
Antique Roadshow whenever I can catch it. This
book has just exquisite, very rich and fine items
pictured in color. It was a pleasure to look at
    them.

16
Physical Format
  • Book only at this time.

17
Special Features
  • After looking over the book and then trying to
find images for this presentation I found the
book deals with very fine antiques. There were
not that many images online that compared to
    those in the book.

18
Reference Uses
  • An art history student should find this book
useful as a reference tool. Say, what styles
were popular during different periods, for
    example, was furniture coordinated, upholstered
and matched in color and fabric during the 15th
    century

19
Reference Uses (contd)
  • Well no, the introduction to furniture states
that coordination developed about the 17th
    century after the Renaissance.
