Using the Mildred F. Sawyer Library
  • For Members of the Fenway Library Consortium and
    Affiliated Institutions of the Mildred F. Sawyer
    Library

Entering the Library
  • Back of 73 Tremont
  • The entrance to the Mildred F. Sawyer Library at
    Suffolk University is located at the rear of the
    building at 73 Tremont Street.
  • The building is located at the corner of Tremont
    and Beacon streets on Bostons Beacon Hill. The
    closest MBTA stops are Park Street (Red and Green
    lines) and State Street (Blue and Orange lines).
  • Enter the building in the back from Tremont Place.

The Foyer
  • The Foyer and Card Swipes
  • Past the first set of double doors from Tremont
    Place is the entrance foyer.
  • Card swipes (left side of photo) are used.
    Please wait in the foyer and enter the building
    when someone with a security card enters, or
    someone leaves.

The Corridor
  • The Mural
  • At the mural facing you from the foyer, turn
    right and then left into the corridor.

The Librarys Front Door
  • Front Door
  • The corridor leads to the Librarys main
    entrance. This is the only entrance to and exit
    from the Sawyer Library.
  • Once inside the library, the Circulation Desk is
    on the left.

Finding Books
  • Online Catalogs
  • Members of the Fenway Library Consortium and
    affiliated institutions of the Mildred F. Sawyer
    Library may borrow books.
  • Workstations supporting access to the librarys
    online catalog are located on all three floors.

Where are the Books?
  • Use the location information from the online
    catalog to find the book. Referring to the image
    on the right
  • Location (red box) must be Sawyer. You do not
    have access to other Suffolk University
    libraries.
  • Call (green box) is the Library of Congress
    classification scheme. Follow the LC information
    on the wooden end panel at the end of each row.
  • Status (blue box) informs you if the book is
    expected to be on the shelf or not. Check
    Shelf means that the book is expected to be on
    the shelf.

Moving Vertically -- Elevator
  • The librarys elevator is located in the
    reference stacks and adjacent to the online
    catalog workstations on Floor 2.

Book Stacks on Floor 4
  • Floor 4 Stacks
  • The general collection (those books that can be
    borrowed) are located in the stacks on Floor 4.
  • Books are arranged on the shelves and in the
    stacks using the Library of Congress (LC)
    classification scheme.

What To Expect
  • Photocopiers (all floors)
  • Floor 3 Change machine
  • You may
  • borrow up to 10 books for 28 days
  • use the print periodicals collection on Floor 3
  • photocopy pages from print sources
  • there are photocopiers on each floor
  • you may use cash (there is a change machine on
    Floor 3) or purchase a copy card (next to the
    change machine on Floor 3)

What To Expect
  • Floor 3 Periodicals
  • You may not
  • borrow a laptop from the Circulation Desk
  • use the items on Reserve
  • use or check out the Group Study Rooms
  • check out those materials that do not circulate,
    e.g., reference books, print journals, items in
    Special Collections, etc.
  • access the wireless network or the networked
    printers

Check Out a Book
  • Circulation Desk
  • Library
  • Card
  • If you find a book from the general collection
    that you would like to borrow (check out), take
    the book(s) to the Circulation Desk by the
    entrance/exit on Floor 2.
  • You may borrow up to 10 books for 28 days.
  • To borrow a book
  • go to the Circulation Desk. If this is your
    first time borrowing from the Sawyer Library, you
    will need to be issued a library card
  • provide a staff person at the desk with your
    current ID card from your institution
  • provide information as requested including a
    local mailing address
  • a card is issued that you may use the next time
    to want to borrow books from the Sawyer Library.

Exit / Returning Books
  • Exit through the doors adjacent to the
    Circulation Desk, and then exit the building in
    the back through the foyer in which you entered.
  • Return borrowed books to the Sawyer Library by
    using the book drop in the corridor, or inside
    the Sawyer Library at the Circulation Desk.
  • Most questions may be answered by reviewing the
    information found on the librarys Web site at
  • http//www.suffolk.edu/sawlib/sawyer.htm
