Meet the Author Eric Velasquez was born in 1961
and grew up in the New York City neighborhood of
Harlem. As a child he was always doodling and
drawing, and he loved taking art classes. With
this background, he says, becoming an illustrator
was a natural choice for me. I have never
thought of being anything else."
4
Velasquez advises young people who would like to
become artists to "draw, draw, draw, paint,
paint, paint, read, read, read." He thinks it's
important for young artists to discover their own
abilities and to invent their own visions. "Music
and film are also helpful in pushing your
creativity further," he adds.
