23
Informants Voices
  • We all share slides. . . . Somebody could be
using it and I could be using it at the same
    time.
  • Its quite clear already that theres more good
material here for sophisticated kinds of online
    student reviews.
  • Thats beautiful impasto. Thats sensational!
    about a Saskia image
  • Having all those images available away from home
and to be able to teach with them is fabulous,
especially if you can incorporate other sources.
  • The system itself is enticing enough, after
today I have every intention of putting something
together to use in my class.
  • To me its a revelation that it is even
    possible. . .

24
UCIS Successes
  • 2 UCB faculty members using it in the classroom
  • 2 UCI art historians who explained they would
probably never change from slides to digital
images, but then wanted to use it next term
  • 1 UCI arts and technology education faculty
member willing to test it in teacher training but
would like the K-12 schools to be able to access
    it
  • 1 UCSB tech savvy art historian already using
PowerPoint in the classroom is eager to mine it
    for images
  • 1 advanced graduate student was skeptical about
the quality and functionality of digital images,
but then predicted the death of slide projector
  • ALL felt the image service is valuable enough to
spend some time learning how to use it

Assessment Conclusions
  • Small, Focused Qualitative Study Not
    Generalizable to All Situations
  • Enough Data to Provide Patterns and a Feel for
how a Research Institution Context, i.e. UC
Patrons, Perceive such an Image Service
  • More than Anecdotal when Meshed with other
    Library and VR Experiences

27
Assessment Team
  • CDLs Rosalie Lack, Research Team Leader
  • Maureen Burns, UCI, Assistant Researcher
    Contact MABURNS_at_UCI.EDU
  • Jackie Spafford (UCSB-AH), Jan Eklund (UCB-AH),
Mary Elings (UCB-Bancroft), Bill Landis (UCI-LL),
Rick Rinehart (UCB-MOAC), Maryly Snow, (UCB-ARCH)

28
Communication/Collaboration
  • Consulted Henry Pisciotta and other members of
the Penn State VIUS research team. Henry and the
Director of the UCIS will be presenting more at
    upcoming Digital Library Federation conference.
  • Share Information and Learn from Multiple
    Experiences

29
What Its Going to Take
  • Ongoing Assessment - A Beginning Not the End
  • Increase the Comfort Levels of Librarians and VR
    Curator Facilitators
  • Daunting Task of Getting Faculty to Use It
  • Need Training Opportunities, Users Guides,
    Workshops, 1-on-1 Support
