Parable of the Wedding Feast
  • June 28

2
Think About It
  • Tell us about a time when you turned down an
invitation and you ended up regretting it.
  • Today we look at a story of a kings invitation
to a wedding and many people who foolishly
    rejected the invitation
  • Who was the king?
  • Who did and didnt come?

3
Listen for how people respond to the kings
invitation.
  • Matthew 222-7 (NIV) "The kingdom of heaven is
like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for
his son. 3 He sent his servants to those who
had been invited to the banquet to tell them to
come, but they refused to come. 4 "Then he sent
some more servants and said, 'Tell those who have
been invited that I have prepared my dinner My
    oxen and fattened

invitation.
  • cattle have been butchered, and everything is
ready. Come to the wedding banquet.' 5 "But
they paid no attention and went off--one to his
field, another to his business. 6 The rest
seized his servants, mistreated them and killed
them. 7 The king was enraged. He sent his army
and destroyed those murderers and burned their
    city.

5
Refusing the Invitation
  • What did the king send his servants to do?
  • Upon hearing initial refusals, what did the king
    do?
  • Jewish weddings some background
  • Advance invitations sent out
  • On the wedding day, final invitations sent
    escorts provided for VIPs
  • Wedding banquets were several days of feasting
  • Wealthy hosts provided special wedding garments,
kings might even donate fancy robes they had once
    worn

6
Refusing the Invitation
  • How did the invited guests react to the kings
    second appeal?
  • What invitations has God given to us?
  • How are the responses of the people in the
parable similar to the way people respond to the
    gospel message today?

7
Refusing the Invitation
  • What kinds of things keep people from accepting
    Jesus offer of eternal life?
  • How does God demonstrate His patience to
    unbelievers?
  • How did the king deal with the lawbreakers?
  • ? This is a picture of Gods eventual judgment

8
Listen for the kings plan B.
  • Matthew 228-10 (NIV) "Then he said to his
servants, 'The wedding banquet is ready, but
those I invited did not deserve to come. 9 Go
to the street corners and invite to the banquet
anyone you find.' 10 So the servants went out
into the streets and gathered all the people they
could find, both good and bad, and the wedding
    hall was filled with guests.

9
Accepting the Invitation
  • The kings alternative plan included what
    changes?
  • How did the kings alternative plan work out?
  • The Jews were the people chosen by God to
    represent Him
  • but they rejected Him
  • thus, He extended his offer to the Gentiles
  • God invites all people good and bad to be His
    children

10
Accepting the Invitation
  • If we are Gods servants, whom should we be
    inviting to the wedding supper?
  • What kind of preconceived ideas do we sometimes
have about who should or should not be allowed
    into heaven?
  • What would God say to us about those preconceived
    ideas?
  • What needs to happen in our lives to rid us of
these kind of barriers within our lives?

11
Listen for a further requirement for attending
the wedding feast.
  • Matthew 2211-14 (NIV) "But when the king came
in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who
was not wearing wedding clothes. 12 'Friend,'
he asked, 'how did you get in here without
wedding clothes?' The man was speechless.

12
Listen for a further requirement for attending
the wedding feast.
  • 13 "Then the king told the attendants, 'Tie him
hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the
darkness, where there will be weeping and
gnashing of teeth.' 14 "For many are invited,
    but few are chosen."

13
Dressing Appropriately
  • What did the king order his servants to do with
the man who was improperly dressed?
  • Wedding Garments
  • The wedding clothes did not refer to a particular
    style of garment,
  • were the cleanest and best clothes that each
    person had to wear.
  • Some commentators infer the king actually
    provided the appropriate banquet-wear
  • it was up to the attendee to put it on.

14
Dressing Appropriately
  • What did the appropriate attire communicate about
    the person wearing it?
  • The wedding clothes in the parable that were
needed for admittance to the banquet are meant to
symbolize what quality that is necessary for
entry into the kingdom of heaven?

15
Dressing Appropriately
  • What are some ways that people try to make
themselves right before God or earn their own way
    to heaven?
  • Why do you think people do this associate with
Christians but dont have the necessary
garments to make it into heaven?

16
Application
  • What response should you give to God this week?
  • How is God inviting you ?
  • Dont miss out on Gods greatest invitation ever
  • Do you have your wedding garments?

17
Application
  • The kings servants were sent to the streets to
    gather any who would come
  • We are likewise sent
  • The Great Commission said in Matthew 2819 (NIV)
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of
the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
  • How can you become more involved

18
Application
  • Who do you know who is still refusing the
    invitation?
  • Pray specifically for that person this week
  • Pray for opportunities to renew Gods invitation
    to them
